On July 9, 2015, the Centennial Lady Eagles Basketball Team gave back to the community by volunteering at Sarah’s Kitchen. The team volunteers twice a year; at Thanksgiving and during the summer. Thank you Lady Eagles for your time and dedication to our community.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY: St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent E. Wayne Gent announced that Kim Jay, a recognized literacy leader in the school district, will serve as Allapattah Flats’ new principal, and Eldrique Gardner will bring his expertise in educational leadership to the campus of St. Lucie West K-8 as its new principal. Teachers gave up some of their summer break to take part in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) training. Teachers worked together to create STEM Design challenges that allow students to solve real-world problems. They designed lessons that will give students the opportunities to collaborate with peers, design a model and test the model for effectiveness. St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS), the largest employer in St. Lucie County, is hosting a teacher job fair on Friday, July 24, at Fort Pierce Westwood High School in Fort Pierce from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Superintendent E. Wayne Gent was sworn in as St. Lucie Public School’s new Superintendent of Schools on July 21, 2015, during the School Board meeting. The new superintendent values the support he has received from the community and appreciates this opportunity to serve. He will focus on teaching and learning as the core mission, leadership and talent development, safety with a culture and climate conducive to learning, and communication/customer service/community engagement.
Treasure Coast Titans marched into this summer’s Penny’s Band Camp with a strong student leadership team. The long-standing annual camp, held at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, was host to numerous bands seeking to hone leadership skills, refine fundamentals, and enhance specialized techniques. During the four-day camp experience, students studied with recognized music educators and professionals from the southeastern United States. They learned from Florida Bandmasters’ Association Adjudicators and collegiate band directors. Students received group as well as one-on-one instruction in leadership, colorguard techniques, drum major conducting, and drumline techniques. On May 29, 2015, the Transportation Department bid farewell to Terry Smith, an employee with the district for 32 years, and Phil Vitale, both transportation employees. There will be big shoes to fill, as they both had a wealth of knowledge about our district. They will be greatly missed.
Upcoming fifth grades had the opportunity to attend summer camp at F. K. Sweet. Students are learning and having fun all at the same time. Students explored force and motion using balloon race cars to demonstrate the forces surrounding us. Pictured, left to right, are Jacob Andreacchio and Larry Freeman.
White City Wildcats are roaring readers! They took on the Action 100 program with amazing ambition and the results show their success. Students read at least one hour every school day and 30 minutes on non school days. The program was completed with the fidelity of steps being recorded daily and ongoing conferencing throughout the year. Congratulations to all!
Our June STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) recipients, Robert Hill and Marrissa Parker, were recognized at the board meeting on June 9, 2015. Robert Hill, Port St. Lucie High School gatekeeper, is an amazing person and colleague. Every day he is out at the front of our school greeting everyone who visits our campus. Mr. Terrance Barriner, teacher at Forest Grove Middle School, read the Juneteenth Resolution to the School Board on June 9, 2015. The 19th of June is the freedom forerunner to the 13th Amendment, which implemented freedom for all slaves in the United States, Juneteenth Independence Day completes the cycle of Independence Day Celebrations in America. The Juneteenth celebration commemorates the emancipation of Southern Blacks on June 19, 1865, two and half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Allapattah Flats K-8 School was recognized at the school board meeting for receiving a 1st place Green Garden Award from the US Green Building Council South Florida Chapter Treasure Coast Branch at its fourth annual Generation Green Apple Awards on May 16, 2015. The Allapattah Flats garden program was the inspiration and has been the perspiration of teacher Rebecca Benton who has coordinated the development of multiple gardens on the school campus. WeatherSTEM was recognized at the board meeting on June 9th for their donation of the Weather Compass to Southport Middle School. WeatherSTEM is a fun and educational program that benefits the entire community. WeatherSTEM CEO, Ed Mansouri, is donating a program called Weather Compass that combines a number of products and services to create a well-rounded weather experience. On May 18, Mayor Gregory Oravec spent the morning enjoying breakfast and answering candid questions from Student Council Members. Mayor Oravec was gracious enough to spend much of the morning visiting with many of the students, and was presented with an honorary key to the school to commemorate his visit.
