On February 9th, 2017, the Panther Battalion completed the second round of the Junior Leadership Academic Bowl (JLAB). They successfully scored an 82% overall and showed great improvement and commitment to make it to the next round. They worked together answering different questions on the verbal, math, and science sections of the timed test. The team was composed of the Cadets Nathen Andrews, Jennifer Soto, Joel Flores, and Sebastian Loschin. They are now awaiting their results to find out if they made it to the third round which will be held in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Baptiste’s third grade student, Jayden Fairchild, put her amazing reading skills to work as she read a favorite classic story to Mrs. Auciello’s first graders! The class was silent and fully engaged as they listened to her read to them.  

Northport students and teachers welcomed the monthly Speakers Bureau recently, and the Northport Media Center truly did “Shine Forth As Gold!” The morning began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by sixth grader, Alicia Brown, dressed as Harriet Tubman. As the program progressed, students from Deborah Allen’s class dressed authentically as famous Black Americans such as Dr. Martin Luther King and Mary McCloud Bethune and more black heroes presented “Who Am I?” speeches. On Tuesday February 7th, Cadet Major Jennifer Arriola (right) was awarded the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 8058, Voice of Democracy Essay/Audio Scholarship. She wrote and recorded a two-page essay describing her responsibility to America. Her essay was titled “The Land of the Free.” In her essay, she described her mission to give back to America and expressed her patriotism for this great country. White City Elementary students enjoyed a dramatic production of Rockin’ Red Riding Hood.  Students made connections between the stage presentation and the traditional story version.  Students had a rockin’ good time as they compared point of view, themes, and the pattern of events.  

SLWCH Parli Pro Team (11th grade) placed 2nd at the HOSA District IX Winter Leadership Conference (WLC). The purpose of the parliamentary procedure was to develop leadership skills in HOSA members by conducting a simulated business meeting. This event was based on team competition; therefore, members learned the importance of cooperation and working together through competitive performance. This event involved two rounds of competition. Round One consisted of a written test to evaluate the team’s understanding of parliamentary procedure. Students across the Northport campus are working to do their part and conserve our earth. Fifth grade teacher, Melanie Polascak, spearheaded a campaign to bring recycling to the school. Students interested in the effort meet in Polascak’s classroom on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to organize and to work together to get twenty bins from Waste Pro. Every Tuesday morning before school, twelve interested students go across campus and bring the bins to the front of the school then they meet again on Thursday to bring the empty bins back to their designated spots.
