Black History Month is celebrated every February and is a time set aside to learn about the accomplishments, culture, and contributions of African Americans. Black History Month 2018 Theme Since 1976, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The Black History Month 2018 theme, “African Americans in Times of War,” marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and honors the roles that black Americans have played in warfare, from the American Revolution to the present day. http://www.history.com/topics/black-history/black-history-month

Author Lois McGuire Reads to the Students of Rivers Edge!

Author Lois McGuire visited Rivers Edge Elementary School to read her book Don’t Be That Kid At School.  Each Rivers Edge teacher was given a copy of the book as well as the Teacher Resource Guide, funded through the Education Foundation grants for teachers. Dr. McGuire is a retired Superintendent from New Jersey and worked many years as a classroom teacher. She knows a thing or two about discipline and behavior! Weatherbee Mariners Celebrate Literacy Week 2018

Weatherbee Mariners bid adieu to Celebrate Literacy Week!, Florida 2018 with an old fashioned parade. On Friday afternoon, students and staff joined the magnificent cavalcade of favorite book characters and vocabulary words parading through our hallways.  It was the crowning glory of a week filled with classroom door decorating, buddy reading, Dropping Everything And Reading, creating personalized bookmarks, and more.  Thanks to Literacy Coach Heather Bolitho and the amazing Literacy Committee for promoting a love of literacy at Weatherbee.   .

The District’s winning grant proposal will transform the historic Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts (FPMSA), Samuel S. Gaines Academy (SGA), and Fort Pierce Westwood High School (FPWHS).   All three schools will become Magnet Schools offering innovative programs.  FPMSA and SGA will begin their transformation this August for the 2018-2019 school year as the revitalized, all-new Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST) and Samuel S. Take Steps to Stay Healthy

Take steps to keep yourself and others healthy by following some everyday actions: Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way. Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill.    

Northport Celebrates Florida Literacy Plan

Northport K-8 students are celebrating literacy this entire week along with all the other schools in SLPS and throughout Florida. Students are making “Storybook Snowmen,” playing pre-k through 5 Bingo Challenge, Middle School Literacy Link Challenge, Get Caught Reading and Buddy Reading activities as well as “Chew and Read” and “Lollipop Reading!” Students are promoting reading and literacy skills throughout the school. They love to participate and it brings a focus on reading for pleasure specifically. Northport is pleased to participate in “Celebrate Literacy Week Florida!”

Northport Deans Georgia Stone and Billy Hicks recently stepped into Susan Matteson’s eighth grade class and presented a solid lesson pertaining to personal security. The lesson was a group project where students were given information from the American Security Council Foundation website about personal security and the UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Each group was given an article to read. Students then created a word cloud about the main idea of their topic and the important words about each topic.
