ST. LUCIE COUNTY – On Friday, January 19, students from local high schools competed in a battle of academic with-it-ness that challenged team members’ knowledge of philosophy and humanities, advanced mathematics and scientific theory, as well as a broad range of literature, music, and foreign language. The teams competed for the overall St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) District Championship Team and individual placement on the six-member District Team moving to the State-level 33rd Commissioner’s Academic Challenge slated for April at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
Lincoln Park Academy captured this year’s District Championship title. Team members Sreya Banik, Maria Dominguez, Rachel Fryer Dommel, Maria Battanlino Hernandez, Yanan Lin, and Callie Zheng were well versed in the variety of academic questions posed in the two-round event held at St. Lucie West Centennial High School. Their coach, Paige McMahon, will serve as the District Team Coach. The District Team members include: Maria Battaglino (Lincoln Park Academy), Bay Deckert (Fort Pierce Westwood High School), Rachel Fryer Dommel (Lincoln Park Academy), Joseph Rios (Treasure Coast High School), Riley Smith (Fort Pierce Central), and Callie Zheng (Lincoln Park Academy). Each member was selected based upon individual scores to represent SLPS at the state competition.
