Mariposa Elementary students enjoyed having story time in the media center amongst themselves while using the app Novel Effect. The app follows along with interactive music and sound effects which makes for an extraordinary read aloud. Mason’s friends enjoyed the magical moments listening to their friend read to them.

At Mariposa Elementary, students in second grade got a chance to try out their observation skills by taking a trip to the school garden. Students used tools such as rulers and measuring tapes to measure the new sprouts. Then, they recorded their observations in their science journals. Great job Monarchs!!    

A Texas Roadhouse sponsored lunch with Mariposa Elementary’s Deputy Miller! This is one of ten incentives students could receive for doing their best on the FSA! Others included Principal for the Day, Asst. Principal for the Day, lunches with other leadership team members, and taping the Principal to the wall!

At Mariposa Elementary, Ms. K. Swanson’s 1st grade homeroom is on a pen pal escapade writing and illustrating creative masterpieces with Mrs. Whitfield’s 1st grade class located in Lytle, Texas.  The writing adventure began in early October and will continue until the end of May.   The students are grouped into pairs and enjoy the process of sharing fun information, asking questions that necessitate a direct response and learning fun facts about the state of Texas.  The class is looking forward to “meeting” their pen pals live through skype in the weeks to come. At Mariposa, Mrs. Elizabeth Forbes, first grade teacher, volunteered to serve as the Unicef Coordinator.  She turned this into a learning experience for her students.  She had enough coins to allow her first graders to sort, count, make patterns, and even count by 5’s and 10’s.  What an opportunity!  So now these first graders know their coins! At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Linda Auciello’s 1st grade students Olivia Watson, Joseph Rivera, Houston Bidot-Lascala, Kierstin Maggard and Brayden Myers are creating 3-D shapes using Play-doh and toothpicks. Math centers are practiced to ensure students stay engaged and gain a variety of different learning opportunities within their classroom.

Students in Mrs. Theresa Delancy’s 5th grade ELA class have been reading the novel, Wonder by R.J. Palacio. They have been learning the importance of being kind and accepting to others. Mrs. J. Scipioni’s 5th grade students at Mariposa Elementary have been working hard in math and science. They worked in inquiry groups to figure out how to separate base ten blocks to divide 2-digit divisors. Ashonni Crenshaw, Elivia Hughey, and Julia Caquias are working together as a team separating their base ten blocks. Mariposa Elementary’s Fifth Grader, Brandon Roth, took action to help another during difficult times, and he was recognized for his actions by the St. Lucie County Fire District with a Citizen Hero Award. Brandon Roth was riding his hoverboard to a friend’s home in Port St. Lucie to play when he noticed a woman was on the ground lying unconscious by her front door.  He investigated and saw that she was in real trouble.  He flagged down a passing car and told them what he saw and asked them to call 911.  They did and Brandon waited by the woman until … Read More

Pete the Cat! Oh my! Mariposa Elementary students kicked off their school year at Barnes and Noble with Pete the Cat. Pete stayed to listen to Mr. Logue read his very own books, Pete the Cat’s Got Class and Duncan the Story Dragon — a 2016-17 Sunshine State Young  Reader Award Junior nominated  book.  Pete loved both stories and helped the students decorate their cookies, build Lego buildings, and shop for books. Open House was a success! We had a great night welcoming our new and old students to Mariposa Elementary. Mr. Logue officially welcomed our new Kindergarten students and their families explaining that they are now officially Monarchs. After the orientation, the students were able to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers. There were stations set up to help parents complete their registration, find their buses, complete lunch applications, and apply to volunteer. Mariposa Elementary VPK Students were encouraged to review the letters they learned. The students practiced by matching magnet letters to letter cards. They also reviewed upper and lower case letters by finding their match. The students collaborated together, worked together as a team, and practiced taking turns to allow everyone’s input to be observed.  

Mrs. Bonilla’s VPK students at Mariposa Elementary have begun their second week of insect learning. They learned about characteristics, identifying different types, what makes them special, and insect body parts. The students used an Insect Checklist to help them learn these skills. Each day the students focused on one insect and used visuals and technology to further their learning. The students also listened to insect stories during storytime. They wrote sentences that described each insect while practicing correct sentence structure. In Ms. Bonilla’s VPK class at Mariposa Elementary, students have been discussing what sentences are, the parts of a sentence, and how to build a sentence. Students were given a sentence on a strip, completed some shared reading, and went around their tables reading each of the sentences. The students were able to pick up on the pattern of “I can” and decode words by looking at a visual. Afterwards, they rebuillt their sentences since they had been deconstructed. Mariposa Elementary’s VPK has been focusing on things they can build. A lot of the answers have been literal and very common for our students: build a tower, build a castle, bridge. Mrs. Claudia Bonilla has tried to move the conversation into topics that are not as obvious such as we can build friendships, stories, etc. The students were able to review the parts of a story, and/or story elements. They reviewed characters, setting, plot, lesson, and then they discussed how they could build their own story by including some of those elements. Mrs. Michelle Smith’s second grade students from Mariposa Elementary were privileged to visit the Hallstrom Planetarium at Indian River State College.  The children learned how to find cardinal directions in the sky to help them discover different constellations.  Students also took a trip through space, learning about how the planets closer to the sun are hotter than those further from the sun.  Did you know you could fit a million Earths in the sun? Mariposa Elementary’s  reading night at Barnes and Noble was a huge success. There were stories, cookies, and surprises. Catarina Rodriguez is reading a book before Storytime. At Mariposa Elementary, 3rd grade students in Ms. Micheal Forrester’s class used cereal to practice finding the area of a rectangle with the Distributive property.

Mariposa Elementary 3rd grade teacher, Ron Smith, won educational supplies for his entire class just by answering a few questions! His students received bags that included two books published by Port St. Lucie Utility Systems: Water Hugs and Who is Francis FOGberg?, plus Water Cycle Wristband and Toilet Paper Roll Rainbow Windsock Activity Kits, and lots more. The employees of Mariposa Elementary are not just coworkers; they also pull together as family. When Hurricane Irma came through Port Saint Lucie and left Mariposa Elementary with debris to clean up, everyone knew it would take many hands to clean our school. After the storm, Mr. R. Craig Logue, Mrs. Brie Lamb, faculty, and staff pulled together and cleaned Mariposa’s school grounds from the debris which Hurricane Irma left in its aftermath. It was a lot of hard work, but the result was beautiful.
