MDA Students Recognized by Broadcom

Congratulations to Mosaic Digital Academy’s Elizabeth Briglia and Trevor Gill who submitted applications to the Broadcom Masters national middle school science competition! Both were selected as Broadcom MASTERS nominees! To be selected is a great honor—only the top 10% of science fair projects nationwide are selected for this opportunity. MDA Receives Innovation Grant

Mosaic Digital Academy Principal, Jeanne Ziemba and her staff were presented with a $2500 I.D.E.A. Grant from FLVS (Florida Virtual School) for demonstrating Innovation, Design, Efficiency, and Achievement in a public virtual school program. McKinney Vento Program Packs Holiday Bags for Students Experiencing Homelessness

The McKinney Vento Program, with the help of countless donors, packed Holiday Bags brimming with love and essentials last week. These bags were sent out to the schools to go home with their students currently experiencing homelessness. From cozy Bombas socks to Barnes & Noble books sparking imaginations, handwritten cards, and hygiene items, each bag was a personalized treasure trove. District Homeless Liaison, Kylee Fuhr, and Student Assignment Coordinator, Kandiss Moore, passionately advocated for students experiencing homelessness during their recent visit to Washington DC. Their advocacy efforts involved productive meetings with dedicated staff from both the offices of Brian Mast and Marco Rubio. McKinney Vento in the Community

McKinney Vento Case Manager, Dieucica Times, took part in the Black Health Panel to show support for National Black HIV/AIDS Day. During the event, she shared valuable insights about the McKinney Vento program’s eligibility criteria and the assistance it provides to our SLPS families. With her wealth of experience and expertise in working with this demographic, Dieucica effortlessly blended her two backgrounds, adding an impactful and memorable element to the event.

May’s STAR Award Recipients Recognized

Mrs. Barbara Bennett and Mrs. Belkis Madera were recognized as May’s STAR (Special Thanks And Recognition) Award recipients at the school board meeting on May 12, 2015. Mrs. Barbara Bennett, 3rd grade teacher at Frances K. Sweet Elementary, was nominated by a parent of one of her students. The parent stated how happy and pleased she was with her daughter’s academic achievements and the great improvements Camila has made in reading and comprehension. Mayor Oravec Visits Manatee Academy 1st Grade Students

On Monday, December 7th, the first graders at Manatee Academy were fortunate to have Port St. Lucie’s  Mayor Gregory Oravec as a special guest speaker. He talked about the duties and responsibilities he has as our mayor. The students found this very informative and had many questions for him. This was an excellent opportunity for them to continue to learn about the roles leaders have in our community.

Mayor Meets Manatee 3rd Graders!

To celebrate Government Week, Manatee Academy third grade students interacted with our mayor, Mayor Shannon Martin! Our students enjoyed listening to Mayor Martin describe the civic duties of a mayor and the students were excited to ask her questions about these responsibilities! This experience provided our students a connection to our current reading lessons based on the essential question, “Why do people participate in government?” Thank you Mayor Martin for taking the time to provide this valuable experience for our students at Manatee Academy!

Mayor Joins Westwood Cadets at their Military Ball

Ft Pierce Mayor, Linda Hudson, joined the Panther Battalion Cadets for the Annual Military Ball held on Friday, February 13th. Mayor Hudson was the key note speaker for this year’s ball which was held at the Ft Pierce National Guard Armory. Cadets honored traditions such as the posting of the colors, military toasts and the grog bowl ceremony. The Panthers also let their hair down with a catered dinner and lively dancing. Mayor Benton proclaims new crest for Westwood ROTC

Fort Pierce Mayor Robert Benton recently presented a special proclamation from the city to the Westwood High School administration and ROTC battalion for the new unit patch and crest to recognize their “pride in the past, dedication in the present and confidence in their future.” The school colors of maroon and grey are present in the crest, with maroon symbolizing victory and black symbolizing consistency. Other icons symbolize the arts, science, atheltics, knowledge, and spirit of adventure found in every cadet, the proclamation states. Media Arts students created their own Star Wars-themed Morning Announcements by using various techniques they’ve learned, such as camera operation, presenting, audio engineering, and production lighting. May ArtSpace Features Cobras

The Fort Pierce Branch Library’s ArtSpace features works by students from Fort Pierce Central High School on display during May. Showcasing two-dimensional works from students, several of these pieces were part of their senior portfolio. Inspired by contemporary and classical artists, the students’ work experiments with various lines, values and movements, creating incredibly intricate designs and sophisticated compositions. The Fort Pierce Branch Library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m., Wednesdays from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Fridays from          9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Mariposa Elementary students learn matter matters

Students in Maria Nunez’s fourth grade class at Mariposa Elementary are studying matter. Pictured, from left, Joslyn Patterson, Sydney Luppens, Faith White, Taline El-Khoury, Alanna Riverahad were asked to measure the  volume and mass of objects. Each station had a different activity exploring matter. For example, at one station, students had to find the volume of an irregular object using water displacement. Students were engaged and learned how to work as a team.

Matter matters to Allapattah Flats third graders

Third grade students at Allapattah Flats K8 School continue to demonstrate their scientific minds. Recently, students had an opportunity to travel to other classrooms and participate in five different experiments related to matter. Students did experiments with oobleck to demonstrate the states of matter. Another experiment demonstrated the chemical change when a penny is dipped in a vinegar and salt solution. Matter Matters at Mariposa Elementary School!

Fourth grade students in Ms. Mellion’s class at Mariposa Elementary showed that matter matters! They were given an opportunity in science to show the three states of matter as well as describe their particles. Students used shoe boxes to display and create their projects. Students also presented their projects to the class for everyone to enjoy. Below are just some of the amazing examples the students created.

Mathletes Earn the Top Scores at Morningside

Today we celebrated our Morningside Mathletes! The goal of the program is to build a love of math through challenging problems that promote critical thinking. The students showcase their talents through both regional and national competitions. Our Mathletes have worked hard to rise to the challenge and we couldn’t be more proud! “Math problems are no problem!”
