Morningside Students Sample Some Delicious Data!

Mrs. Saulnier’s 1st grade class learned about data points and frequency by charting their favorite pie. Students sampled pumpkin pie, apple pie, and cherry pie. Then students plotted their data points on a picture graph. Students also represented their data with tally marks and compared different types of pie using data! Morningside Students Hike Around the World!

Second grade students at Morningside Elementary have begun their “hike around the world”. First stop: Africa. Each student chose a country, completed a research packet, developed a project, and presented it to their classmates. Where will they go next? Morningside Student Council Makes a Difference

Morningside Elementary student council regularly goes out of their way to spread kindness to their peers. They worked collaboratively to create colorful posters that were displayed throughout the school that reminded others to choose kindness. Posters were displayed as part of our week of kindness initiatives. Students are led by Morningside’s Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Panaccione.

Morningside Shines Bright

MSE Shines BRIGHT in the Solar Eclipse Light! Today, classes viewed the eclipse and recorded observations. Students then answered the essential question: Did Florida experience a Total Solar Eclipse? Then teachers were treated with an eclipse-themed lunch, SunChips, moon pies, Sunkist, and pizza pies. It was a sunny day for all. #MSEshinesBRIGHT

Morningside SHAPES Education with a Geometry Lesson

The Math Team for School Improvement joined with teachers of all grades to use geometry in a fun early release lesson.  Each grade level had an appropriate plan beginning with Kindergarten students using shapes to create fall and winter pictures and ending with the upper grades making monsters with specific parameters such as “if you own a pet your monsters legs should be intersecting” or ” if you are a girl your eyes are NOT a polygon.”                                           

Morningside Rolls Out the Red Carpet

Morningside rolled out the red carpet for a star-studded morning as we kicked off the start of state testing for grades 3-5. Teachers and staff wrote encouraging messages along the red carpet for students to read as they made their way to breakfast and class. It was quite an exciting morning, to say the least! Today, 4th and 5th-grade students completed their PM3 Reading Assessment. Way to go Blue Jays—keep making us proud! #MSEshinesBRIGHT

Morningside Recognized for Energy Project

National Energy Education Development (NEED) selected Morningside Elementary as THE Florida Elementary School of the Year and National Elementary School Runner-Up. The award was based on Mrs. Mukhamedov’s 5th grade class portfolio on energy studies. The fifth-grade group was highly engaged as their studies and experiments on the science of energy led them through class activities, energy expos, and community festivals.  It was an amazing opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge about energy and share information with others to support a more energy conscious community. Morningside Receives Recognition for Toys for Tots

Congratulations are in order for Morningside Elementary and Principal, Kathleen Melrose.  For the 2018 holiday season, Morningside Elementary gathered 1020 toys for donation to Toys for Tots.  The community is thankful for your generosity.  Way to go Morningside!

Morningside PTO Presents Escape School

The PTO at Morningside Elementary hosted parents and students for an exciting evening of dinner and Escape School.  Mr. Seliga taught students how to escape from adults who could cause them harm and gave them tips on how to ask for help from adults.  

Morningside Promotes the Love of Literacy as an Everglades Gold Status school!

Mrs. LaChance’s class practiced their class read-aloud procedures and started their first 4th grade Everglades lesson from the Everglades Foundation. They read “Everglades” by Jean Craighead George and discussed why it is so important to work together to protect the Everglades. Then extended the activity by discussing the beautiful figurative language that they found in the book. Students chose a line that they felt created a vivid mental image and created artwork to share that mental image with their peers. ☀️ #MSEshinesBRIGHT  

Morningside Principal Gets Pied for Attendance

Morningside’s principal is always finding ways to encourage students to show up! Recently, Morningside competed in a March Madness competition for perfect attendance. Grade levels who met their attendance goals each week earned points for their team. Then, the team with the most points (BEST attendance) for March, won the right to watch the “pie-ing” live. Fifth-grade students won that honor. Next, one student from each grade level  (and one staff member) with perfect attendance earned the right to pie their principal as a reward for perfect attendance. Morningside Places at State Tournament

Three of Morningside Elementary’s Odyssey of the Mind teams competed at the state tournament last weekend. We are so proud of all of our teams for representing our school well. Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving competition where students completely take the lead and create the sets, props, costumes, and even the script without adult intervention. These teams work all year long to create a solution for one of the problems presented. Morningside Places 2nd in the World for the Odyssey of the Mind Competition

At the September 9th School Board meeting Morningside Elementary was recognized as a winner of Odyssey of the Mind. Students took 2nd in World for Problem 2 Division 1. Odyssey of the Mind is a creating problem-solving competition for students of all ages. Teams of students select a problem, create a solution, then present their solution in a competition against other teams in the same problem and division. The teams of up to seven students work under the guidance of an adult coach. Morningside OMers are going to States

Morningside Elementary is advancing to the state competition. On Saturday, four teams from MSE competed at the Odyssey of the Mind regional competition. Odyssey of the Mind is an international problem-solving, competition where students learn to work together and solve problems using creativity. Two teams won first place and will be advancing to states. Although our primary team is not competitive, their performance earned them a position at states as well. We are super proud of all four of our teams that worked very hard. #MSEshinesBRIGHT #OM #OdysseyoftheMind #academicexcellence

Morningside Odyssey of the Mind Team Places 2nd at World with a Perfect Score in the Spontaneous Competition

Aliza Ahmed, Erika Austria, Kendrick Carpenter, Nichapa Dancharnjitt, Noah Hamilton, Angela Witz-Schaffer and Charley Willoughby represented our school, county, region, and state at the Odyssey of the Mind World Competition in Ames, Iowa, May 27-31, 2014. They ranked 2nd in the world overall with a perfect score in the spontaneous competition! What a life changing opportunity and experience to meet and greet students who came from all over the world.
