Weatherbee Had a Terrific Turkey Time!

  Students and faculty at Weatherbee got festive before Thanksgiving break! Students earned tasty treats for reaching their goals while faculty members participated in a competitive turkey hunt. Fun was had by all before enjoying a restful break.

Weatherbee Fall Reading Challenge Ends With a Pie in the Face

On Monday, November 24th, the Weatherbee Fall Reading Challenge ended.  570 students read 10,379.123 words and earned a total of 7,785 points.  The top students in each class received the honor of throwing a cream pie at their teacher!  Pictured is Katelynn Justice pieing her teacher, Mrs. Melanie MacPherson, as teacher Mr. Ed Strivelli looks on.

WBE Ends 2016 With Episodic Reading Event

Weatherbee hosted an episodic reading event on the last day before winter break.  Members from the community, including SLPS District Office employees, St. Lucie County School Board Members, business leaders, St. Lucie County Commissioners, and law enforcement professionals came to Weatherbee to share their love of reading with our Mariners.  Each guest reader visited three classrooms, read a book aloud, and shared how literacy has positively impacted their lives.

Weatherbee Elementary’s Kindergarten Math Superstars

In Ms. Gagliano’s Kindergarten class at Weatherbee Elementary, math came to life through a fun game of musical chairs! Students are currently working on Unit 4 – Understanding Addition and Subtraction, with today’s focus on making connections to addition as “putting together” or “counting on” (NSO.3.1). As music played, students moved around the room, eagerly waiting for it to stop. When it did, they quickly sat down, grabbed a dry-erase board and marker, ready to write down the equation announced by their teacher. Weatherbee Elementary’s 5th Grade ELA in Action

Weatherbee Elementary’s 5th Grade Literacy in Action! Our 5th grade students are diving deep into literature by analyzing texts with similar themes! Using a hexagon thinking strategy, students compared how Meg and Buck face challenges related to the theme of survival. By making strong connections, discussing how and why ideas relate, and citing text evidence, students practiced explaining how themes develop across different stories.  This rigorous activity met the Florida B.E.S.T. Standard 5.R.1.2. explain the development of stated or implied theme(s) throughout a literary text. Weatherbee Elementary students show caring for community

Weatherbee Elementary students in Jennifer Nelson’s fourth grade class read the book, “Dexter the Tough” where a fourth grade boy finds out his father is recovering from cancer. Students wrote encouraging letters and made “Links of Hope” with words of hope for cancer patients at St Lucie Medical Center. Letters and links were picked up by hospital public relations representative Ginger King.  What a wonderful way to support others in the community. 

Weatherbee Elementary students participate in Positive Behavior poster contest

Weatherbee Elementary students participated in a poster contest depicting the school’s S.A.I.L. (Self-Control, Acts Responsibly, Is Respectful, and Learn) Expectations. Students in pre-K through fifth grade had an opportunity to enter this unique contest and create posters depicting one or all of the school wide Positive Behavior Support expectations. Eight winners were selected and each received a Wal-Mart gift card. Winning posters were displayed in the cafeteria. Weatherbee Elementary students participate in charity event

A recent picture-perfect day was a perfect setting for the “Jump Rope for Heart” event at Weatherbee Elementary. The annual event is part of the American Heart Association and their mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. In the weeks preceeding the fundraising event at Weatherbee Elementary, each class raised money as a team by filling up a can in their classroom with their extra coins. Physical Education teacher Nuran Onal, who organized the event, rewarded classes raising the most money with pizza parties, certificates, and jump ropes. Pictured, from left, are Zarek Fernandez, Jefte Simplice, and Israel Bradley.

Weatherbee Elementary students enjoy Saturday science enrichment camps

Weatherbee Elementary students are spending Saturday mornings in a science enrichment camp fostering creative problem solving and teamwork – 21st century life skills imperative to success in our modern society. Each Saturday, students rotate through stations, each of which encourages working in diverse teams, engaging in investigations, experiments, and engineering challenges that combine science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in enriching, hands-on activities. Weatherbee Elementary students enjoy Career Day

Weatherbee Elementary School students learned about various career opportunities and how a quality education can make a huge difference in their future as Ian Macpherson, St. Lucie County firefighter, describes the uniform used when he is fighting a fire. Melanie Macpherson, third grade teacher at Weatherbee, served as a model for this activity.

Weatherbee Elementary students collect food for local charity

Throughout the month of October, students at Weatherbee Elementary School participated in a food drive to assist the Salvation Army. This was another shining example of the Kids at Hope philosophy (Community and Service) at work at Weatherbee Elementary. This event was coordinated by Roberta Weil with the help of the Weatherbee Elementary Safety Patrol officers. Classrooms participated in creating decorated boxes to collect the food and over 320 pounds of food was collected.  Way to go, Mariners! Weatherbee Elementary students celebrate reading success

Students at Weatherbee Elementary celebrated as their Stampede into Reading Challenge came to a close.  Over 5200 books were read by students with top readers receiving a special photo from the Stampede Crew.  Pictured are top readers from Weatherbee’s fifth grade (from left ) Aaron Reed from Charles Cornyn’s class, Sebastian Johnson from Kim Brennan-Lee’s class, Brianna Snyder from Caroline Redding’s class  and Sara Robbins from Rachelle Miller’s class.  They are joined by Principal Michael Hitsman and Assistant Principal Dianne Young.  On horseback are Thomas Richards riding Levi and Emily Bullins riding Dreamer.

Weatherbee Elementary students and parents enjoy math night

Weatherbee Elementary held a successful fifth Annual Publix Math Night Event recently. More than 80 eager students and their parents experienced applying real life, age appropriate math skills to complete math word problems. A big thank you to Publix for providing goodie bags and cookies to all participants for returning their completed math worksheet. All students had a fun time and learned a lot as they earned a homework pass for a job well done. Weatherbee Elementary student gets special moment

 Demi Barnett, a kindergarten student in Isabelle Brunache’s class at Weatherbee Elementary enjoyed a special moment with Santa as she received the first gift of Christmas as a part of the kindergarten’s Polar Express literacy activity.  Santa arrived with the support of the St. Lucie County Fire Department complete with a police escort.  Snow fell from above to complete this special moment for Weatherbee students.  What a wonderful way to make literature come alive.        

Weatherbee Elementary Shines at Night of the Stars

Weatherbee Elementary School was excited to celebrate their Night of the Stars recipients at this year’s annual gala.  Michelle Baker, teacher of the year, Brooke Gagliano, first year teacher of the year, Saily Belfast, school-related employee of the year, and Yahaira Oms, distinguished minority educator of the year, were all honored.  Our representatives and the other stars of the night represent the best of the best of St. Lucie Public Schools Employees.  We all enjoyed our time celebrating the hard work and achievements of everyone.  It was a lovely evening, and we look forward to celebrating again next year.
