Northport K8 celebrates student of the month

Northport K8 celebrates national mentors month

Northport K-8 School is celebrating right along with schools, clubs and businesses across the nation this month in honoring January as National Mentors Month. The motto for this special month nationwide is “Be Someone Who Matters to Someone Who Matters!” At Northport K-8 School, a St. Lucie County “Kids At Hope” school, there is plenty to be thankful for during National Mentors Month. Northport K8 celebrates national library week

Northport K-8 fifth graders in Valerie Niewieroski’s class helped celebrate National Library Week April 8-14, 2012, at the school by visiting the Media Center and checking out new library books and playaways, which are books with a matching audio reader.  Students are voraciously reading books utilizing the playaways. Sixth grade instructor Amanda Sartain commented that the students don’t even care what they are reading as long as they are using the playaways. The school media center is busier than ever helping families, students and teachers find appropriate reading materials and providing computers for research skills building and finding up to the minute resources … Read More

Northport K8 celebrates Mardi Gras

Northport K-8 Northstar team prepared a special celebration for the school’s younger students recently.  Students made Mardi Gras masks and mini floats using materials brought in from home and marched in a Mardi gras parade.  The band students on the team led the festivities with their own rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In!”  Students threw beads and candies to the young onlookers.  The activities planned by the team instructors throughout the day led to an effective lesson about Mardi Gras and promoted positive interactions among students and teachers.  Pictured is student Sabrina Wing.

Northport K8 celebrates cultures with flair

Northport K-8 School celebrated cultures of the world in a wonderful and highly energized afternoon of booths, theater groups, costumes, posters, trinkets and lots of information.  Students and teachers prepared displays replete with music and interactive fun while learning information about 22 different countries of the world.  Students were engaged with a desire to learn and teach information that was creative, innovative and lots of fun!

Northport K8 celebrates Cinco de Mayo

Northport K-8 third graders celebrated Cinco de Mayo and integrated Positive Behavior Support into their day by giving students who earned SAIL Notes a choice of activities as a reward.  Students chose between viewing The Three Caballeros, eating chips and salsa, dancing to fiesta music or making confetti pinatas.  Students worked together using tissue paper and glue then filled the pinatas with goodies to share.  Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on the fifth of May each year and commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.  This is a celebration of … Read More

Northport K-8 School held a very memorable Black History Month celebration in the school gymnasium recently. The Northport middle grades band and chorus performed special numbers commemorating Black History and selected students honored important cultural role models such as President Obama, Michelle Obama and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Special guest who served as keynote speaker was former Northport principal, Gloria Johnson Scott. Mrs. Johnson Scott reminded students that each was important and as long as you believe in yourself and conceive an idea or plan that it could be achieved through hard work and dedication. The program was a wonderful celebration of the … Read More

Northport K8 awarded for support of military

Northport K-8 School proudly accepted a commendation by 14 Medal of Honor recipients held recently in Texas.  The Medal of Honor recipients signed a plaque with the date and signatures of each national hero.  The plaque reads in part, “For the students, faculty and staff of Northport K-8 School located in Port St. Lucie, Florida, for their exceptional support of active duty military personnel and the veterans community of St. Lucie County, Florida.”  The Medal of Honor is the highest award offered to U.S. military.  Most awards are given posthumously for going far above and beyond the call of duty in the … Read More

Northport K8 and Manatee Academy students share book reviews via teleconference

In an experience that the students will not soon forget, Northport K-8 School and Manatee Academy seventh and eighth grade students participated in the Young Adult Choices program, or YAC as it known by students, media specialists Lynne Gruszka and Debbie Remington and middle school grades teachers, using advanced technology. Students from both schools introduced themselves via the teleconference technology, gave both positive and negative book reviews on the special selections in the program, and hailed each other for taking the lead to read! The media specialists promoted positive interactions by guiding students through the teleconference and provided students with a voice … Read More

Northport K-8 students in several different classes are vigorously preparing for the school’s second annual Women’s History/Women’s Victory celebration to be held in the Media Center to commemorate the strength and determination of women and to salute March as Women’s History Month.  A sampling of performances are seventh grade girls in Dot Still’s classes preparing a dramatic reading of Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman, fourth grade students in Juliette Thelusma’s class demonstrating a Susan B. Northport K-8 GiveBack2Kids Student of the Month show citizenship, outstanding progress in awesomeness, and are all around GREAT students! We thank our partners in education, James Monds and David Gornitzky (GiveBack2Kids CEOs) who help us honor positive attitude and remarkable behavior. This is our final GB2K award for the 2018-2019 school year. All students selected this year for this award and their families will be invited to an honorary banquet in May. Northport K-8 third graders bring holiday cheer to veterans

Northport K-8 third graders in Melanie Polascak’s class wrote letters to veterans to commemorate Veteran’s Day.  The teacher and students discussed bravery, Americanism, patriotism and the love of America. After the class discussions, Ms. Polascak and her students decided to extend their efforts and work with the Red Cross Holiday Mail For Heroes program and get the students’ messages to the men and women who are hospitalized or on the front lines in the U.S. military.  The students’ writing included description, use of effective words, good mechanics and punctuation, as well as heart for the holiday season.

Northport K-8 students use math to design art

Northport K-8 School students in Jennifer Gomez’s fourth grade class studied tessallations in math class and processed the new information by making their own tessallations, which are a pattern of shapes that fit together with no spaces and no overlapping.  Students used their textbooks and a book by author and tessallation artist M.C. Escher to comprehend the new information and to design their own tessallations.  Students took squares, drew lines in the squares, used vertical and horizontal lines and cut out the square.  Students then fit the pieces back together, traced more pieces, flipped and slid the pieces to form a … Read More

Northport K-8 students study body organs and their function

Northport K-8 School second grade students in Barbara Greenwood’s class used a real cow’s stomach lining called tripe, a cow’s heart and a cow’s kidney to perform inspections and learn new information about the human body. Students examined each body part and determined the functions of each organ.  They understood after the in-depth lesson that the kidney removes the waste products from the body, the heart pumps and has chambers, and that the stomach lining keeps the stomach strong so it doesn’t rupture and  the stomach digests foods. Many thanks to Northport K-8 7th grade Stingray students Dymond Wilkerson, Ariel Perry, Tyreese Morrison, and Jaivon Curate. These students showed initative and unpacked the entire book fair! They carried boxes, moved the carts, designed and organized the books, and really worked hard to make THEIR book fair great. This year’s book fair is designed by and for students at Northport K-8!

Northport K-8 students in Mr. Fess’ eighth grade STEM class continue to work on their robotics and problem-solving skills. This week, students designed, coded, and built their own solutions to the problem of getting a small block through a “minefield” into a bin at the other end. Their varied solutions are a testament to the creativity and engineering skills these students are developing.

Northport K-8 Students Host Mayor Joanne Faiella

Northport K-8 School kindergarten students in Melody Nieves hosted Port St. Lucie mayor, Joanne Faiella recently. Mayor Faiella graciously accepted the invitation by Big Brothers, Big Sisters AmeriCorps tutor, Alex Neelan who tutors several of the kindergarten students. Mrs. Nieves prepared the students by having them make welcome signs in the front office, on the classroom door and in the classroom. Seventh-grade Northstars students in Mr. Fess’ STEM class performed experiments to lower their blood pressure and pulse rates. These students are currently studying vital signs as part of their Medical Detectives unit.

Northport K-8 Students Generate Electricity From Water

Sixth grade students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM class designed and built water turbines as part of their unit on Hydropower. These students are studying various types of alternative energy sources in this course while also learning about the Engineering, Science, and Math necessary to harness the energy. Students chose to design and build using 3D modeling software or with physical materials to generate real electricity using running water. Each project, virtual or physical, contains water wheels acting as a turbine and a generator. Students who made physical models then used multimeters to measure the electricity being generated.
