Northport Lower Grades Rock Field Days

Northport second grade instructor Jennifer Lusardi and her class, along with students and teachers from VPK to grade five, participated in fun and energizing field days recently at Northport. The students loved the time playing games and competing for ribbons. According to campus participants, this was healthy, fun, and promoted positive interaction and socialization skills. The kids absolutely loved it! Many thanks to coaches, teachers and parents who made NP Field Days a success for the children.

Northport Loves Langston Hughes!

Students in Sherree Madorma’s 5th grade class not only celebrated Valentine’s Day, but also paid tribute to one of the finest American poets and a Black History icon, Langston Hughes. The program entitled, “We Love Langston Hughes!” was an animated group reading of the Hughes poem, “Harlem.” Students studied what Langston Hughes’ poetry meant to people in the 1950’s. Northport K-8 School has a reputation for battling for causes of all kinds with our local community, our students, our families and the school staff. It was a sincere pleasure to host Port Saint Lucie Mayor, Greg Oravec recently at the school’s sixth Student Leadership Summit. The mayor fielded a variety of questions from sixth grade Sharks students and interacted with the large group of students for nearly two hours. Northport K-8 students and teachers on the Northstar and Starfish teams collaborated on a critical lesson using new and intriguing information recently. Teachers Mala Woessner and Georgia Stone, along with Media Specialist Lynne Gruszka, worked together to present indepth information on the shocking assassination that changed America. Students read the student version of Bill O’Reilly’s “Killing Lincoln,” a realistic and historical best selling account of the last two weeks of Lincoln’s life and the conspiracy that brought a nation to its knees. The student version called “Lincoln’s Last Days” is filled with pictures, timelines and enrichment sources. The book is very student reader friendly … Read More

Northport kindergartners prepare for authors program

Northport kindergartners participate in descriptive lesson

Northport K-8 kindergarten students in Melody Nieves class recently participated in an impressive lesson using the story, “The Legend Of The Indian Paintbrush!” The kindergarteners listened to the story and then talked about describing words. Each student identified a list of words that described characteristics about themselves and created a Native American name for themselves using their describing characteristics. Each then made a special headband with their Indian name enscribed on the band. Students proudly wore the bands all day long and called each other by their Indian names. The lesson engaged the kindergartners and provided each with an opportunity to share information about … Read More

Northport kindergartners enjoy holiday festivities

Northport K-8 kindergarten students in Melody Nieves’ and Megan Castiglia’sclasses enjoyed a special holiday story time in the school’s main media center recently. Students listened to a rendition of the beautiful story  “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg, and then sang holiday songs together. Students sang Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and other holiday favorites. Northport kindergartners dazzle with fluency skills

Northport K-8 kindergartners dazzled parents,grandparents,administrators and guests as they read from a fluency showcase of reading skills. Students dressed for their parts such as the lion, the skateboarder, the cat, the frog, the dreamer and the bug and used a microphone to show off their reading fluency skills in a readers theater program. The school’s media center was filled with parents, grandparents and guests as the students blended different story lines to make one great student showcase of reading skills. Northport kindergartners celebrate being 100 days smarter

Northport K-8 School kindergartners in Shana Cicio, Kara McNair, Nancy Yost, Melody Nieves and Tiffany Tredor’s classes celebrated being 100 days smarter recently by giving a big “Hip Hip Hooray!” to a “One Hundred Days” celebration. Students and teachers collaborated by reading the book “100 Day Worries” by Margery Cuyler. Students also made “100 Day trail mix” with 100 ingredients, counting by tens. Students practiced counting to one hundred and reading and writing one hundred words. Kindergarten teacher Tiffany Tredor thrilled the students by dressing up as a 100-year-old woman. Northport K-8 kindergarten instructor, Tiffany Tredor, and her students have been putting the “sweet and sassy” into learning new vocabulary words this year much to the delight of the students and their very happy parents! Northport K-8 School kindergarteners in Melody Nieves’ class shared with a room full of parents the many reading and writing skills that they have acquired throughout the school year. Students shared Gingerbread books that illustrated an excellent use of beginning, middle and ending for a story plot, good use of punctuation and started each sentence with a capital letter. Northport K-8 kindergartners in Melody Nieves’ classes completed an author study in the school’s Media Center recently as a culminating activity for their Dr. Seuss birthday celebration. Students listened to the story “There’s A Wocket In My Pocket” read by media specialist Lynne Gruszka, then participated in a rhyming word sentence structure activity.  Students then modeled their sentences for the very enthusiastic group of learners. Pictured are the students, along with, from left, assistant Tyna Richards, Ms. Nieves and assistant Mrs. Cleveland.

Northport Kindergarten Graduation Priceless!

Wonderful job to the students, teachers, support staff and parents who have encouraged, prodded and demonstrated kindergartners into a successful end of their first year of school. The songs and showmanship were exemplary and the kindergartners were on their very best behavior when receiving their diplomas and accolades from the hundreds of parents waiting in anticipation for their very own pride and joy to cross the stage. Northport Kicks Off Bullying Awareness!

Every October, Northport K-8 School learns about Bullying Awareness.  On October 2, the school’s anti-bullying message was kicked off by celebrating World Smile Day.  White masks were donated for each child by the school’s Partner in Education, Judi Neville.  The students and teachers decorated the masks using glitter, stickers, crayons, colored pencils and other art supplies.  Smiles were valued and celebrated across the school campus the whole day.  On October 5, the school will unite against bullying for World Anti Bullying Awareness Day by wearing the color blue in unity.  Lessons will be taught in classrooms and a poster contest … Read More

Northport K8’s Culinary Students Cater PSL Citizens Summit

Northport’s Culinary Arts program students catered the Citizen Summit the first Saturday of February which kicked off CTE Month!  They held after-school cooking sessions to prepare for the event.  Select students attended Saturday’s event with Mrs. Tredor, Mrs. Butterworth, Mrs. Sharrah, and Mrs. Bailey where they plated and served over 700 food samples to the public citizens attending the event. A big thank you also goes out to Mr. McDonald who stayed late with us to offer his expertise as well.

Northport K8 Young Author winners selected

All Northport K-8 students participated in the Young Author program recently.  Students planned, wrote, revised, edited, illustrated and published their own book.  Students displayed the books in the school Media Center with decorations and table adornments geared toward the wild west.  Classes, parents and grandparents toured the tables and were able to see  authentic growth of real writers and authors.  Seven  students were selected to represent the best of Northport K8 and will attend a celebration of good writing at Manatee Academy.  Author Donna Gephart will be the guest speaker for the event.  Gephart is the author of “How to … Read More
