Northport K8 science teachers earn unique grant

Northport K-8 middle grades science instructors Amanda Sartain and Kalyn Nova have been selected to receive a 2012 Toolbox for Education Grant for a vegetable garden for the middle school next year.  A school garden allows students to apply curriculum based education in innovative, unique and engaging ways.  Instructors will be using the Gardening For Grades curriculum by Florida Agriculture for planning and creating lesson plans for the garden.  Students will discover the components of a garden that correlates with curriculum from observing plants grown from seeds, measuring growth and designing experiments.  Students at the middle school level will be … Read More

Northport K-8 School sixth grade science teacher Amanda Sartain has won the FAST Award of Promise. The Florida Association of Science Teachers each year selects a science teacher from the state of Florida who has three to five years of experience and has demonstrated an interest and aptitude for teaching science. Some of the qualifications include participation in professional organizations showing leadership at the local, state and national level, maintaining an innovative and exciting classroom/labratory environment, uses innovative materials and new approaches to teaching science, effectively uses community resources and guest speakers and continuously practices professional development through workshops and conferences. Mrs. … Read More

Northport school family gives thanks for many blessings

Northport K-8 School administration, teachers, tutors and staff came together for a special Thanksgiving luncheon recently to count blessings and share camaraderie. The turkeys were carved by Principal Glenn Rustay for each of the lunch sessions and each administrator thanked the staff for digging in their heels and doing the very important and difficult work of educating students. Northport Salutes Veterans Day!

What an absolutely wonderful morning of patriotism and pride at Northport today. Many local veterans came into school to take part in a Veteran’s Panel for students. Mrs. Kemp’s third graders led the program with the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Renelus and his band played the National Anthem and a rousing rendition of a medley of the songs for each branch of the military. Students in Susan Smith’s class read a poem called “The Veteran’s Blessing.” The veterans spoke eloquently about the importance of teamwork, support, brotherhood, education and most importantly, honor and integrity. Northport Robotics Program is Rocking this Year!

Racing to success! Eighth grade Northstars students in Mr. Fess’ STEM class have been working hard designing, constructing and coding their own racecars! The students built their designs using VEX robotics and coded them using Robot-C. This is one of many robotics projects these students will complete this year.

Northport Rising Stars Present Wax Museum!

What a delightful morning in the Northport gymnasium! Northport Rising Stars gifted and enriched teachers and students researched very important people and then portrayed an authentic Wax Museum for parents, families and classes to enjoy. Janine Wiecks, Kate Ploeckelman, Lorena Wilson and Tiffany Tredor presented their students with a wonderful and engaging lesson that brought history to life for so many guests. Northport Rising Stars Offer First Rate Presentation!

What a first rate presentation by Lorena Wilson’s third grade Rising Stars! Students researched a famous Black American using several sources. They also made program guides and actual models of each famous American. Students then presented their oral information using note cards to visiting classes, parents, administration and other special guests. Students became teachers for the afternoon and really demonstrated authentic and intriguing information. With enjoyment and pride, Northport students in Kate Ploeckelman and Lorena Wilson’s second and third grade Rising Star student group, performed a rousing rendition of “The Exaggerated But True Story of the Constitution” and the “Camping Constitution!” It was so impressive to see the young students process new information and develop fluency using important and vital information. Northport is pleased to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. Students are learning facts, participating in Governor DeSantis’ writing and art contest, learning about which countries are part of the Hispanic culture and studying about Hispanic people who have contributed richly to our country. What a pleasure to salute our Hispanic American population and tip our hat to their rich culture that enhances our American experience. 

Northport Reveals Strong Support for SLC Reading Council

Northport K-8 Teachers and staff exhibited strong support for the initiatives of the Saint Lucie County Reading Council with an excellent turnout at the collegiate groups very first function. Each year, Northport K-8 School participates in the St. Lucie County School District History Fair, which this year will be March 1 at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition. The history fair is a wonderful opportunity for students in grades six and eight to not only hone research skills and techniques, but is also an excellent opportunity for students to cultivate and frame their own interests. It is with sincere pleasure that Northport VPK-8 announce that six students from grades five through eight have won the Port Saint Lucie Elks Lodge 2658 Americanism annual essay contest. The contest this year themed “What Does the Pledge of Allegiance Mean to me?” was won by students, Annabelle Sasso, Mayra Benitez, Brandt Wrench, Kalani Walk, Jamie Kosbob and Hanza El-Azzami. Members of the Reading Leadership team at Northport K-8 School are offering reading mentorships to students across the campus. Book selections are based on student choice and interests. The mentorships are flourishing and students are excited to be part of the club memberships. The three opportunities for students being presented are “Divergent” by Veronica Roth, “Out of My Mind” by Sharon Draper and “Oonawasee Summer” by Melissa Forney. Northport K-8 school middle grades students who are struggling to achieve target points for College and Career Anchor Standards for Reading are given the opportunity to build a foundation in reading skills using a broad range of high quality text and programming. One of the programs utilized at the school is the READ 180 program. Northport Rallies For Fifth Annual “Unity Day!”

Every year for the last five years, Northport has united for a huge campaign to stamp out bullying. The students have listened to not only “Joe the Biker” speak, but dozens of other speakers whose message has been one of nonviolence, empowerment and anti-bullying. Students have made thousands of posters, worn orange for anti-bullying and red for drug awareness. Many thanks to our AWESOME Northport PTO! These ladies have worked tirelessly to make sure that the Northport holiday season was so wonderful. They have prepared desserts, brought lunch from Dale’s, read around the Christmas tree, conducted the morning announcement, worked in the Santa Shop and just so much more! Our Northport community wishes our PTO, our parents, grandparents, students and community members a very festive holiday season!

Northport PTO celebrates students

Northport K-8 PTO celebrated the students’ accomplishments for the school year by holding a Fun Run.  Over 100 runners, their families and teachers from Northport K-8 participated in a run, a bounce house, a rock climbing wall and a dinner together after school recently.  Students picked up their 2012 yearbooks and had their teachers sign at the party, then enjoyed some time with their friends during the Fun Run and Yearbook signing party.  It was a wonderfully unifying event and the PTO declared it a success!
