Students on the Mariner team in Bob Burdge’s eighth grade Critical Thinking classes at Norhtport K-8 School are using all the skills necessary to learn to wrap holiday packages. The excitement was palpable as students estimated the amount of paper to wrap recycled boxes. Students measured, cut, and cornered using skills learned in geometry about angles and lines as they beautifully wrapped packages conserving and using the least amount of paper possible. Seventh-grade Northstars in Mr. Fess’ STEM class constructed hot air balloons out of tissue paper, glue sticks, and wire. This project is one of many in their Flight & Space curriculum. The balloons are one stop on the “History of Flight & Space” unit the students are completing.  

In a great feat of reading, students in Northport K-8 second grade teacher Denise Fields’ class went above and beyond participating in the One Hundred Book Challenge program the last nine weeks of school. All students in Mrs. Fields’ class excelled and the entire class reached 100 steps in the program. Each step is a 15 minute reading increment. Students read 15 minutes in class, then another 15 minutes at home with parent partnership.  Parents must sign the reading log to verify reading time. The challenge books are leveled and specifically selected to meet the needs and interests of individual students. Career and Technical Education (CTE) students from middle and high schools across St. Lucie Public Schools recently participated in the CTE Student Showcase. Seventh graders Terriana Monfleury and Samira Moss from Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM class took home 1st place in the Middle School 3D Printing and Welding division. They 3D designed, printed, and presented the “Handrill”, a combination of a hammer and a drill. Congratulations ladies!

Northport K-8 students joined Treasure Coast High School senior Rebecca Cowan and empowered each other against the harmful effects of bullying recently. Students in grades K-5 read stories, discussed bullying issues and worked in activity books designed by Rebecca. Students in all grades worked together to bring the powerful message by wearing the color pink! Rising Stars 1st-4th grade students delivered holiday cheer to the residents at the Port St. Lucie Nursing and Restorative Care Center. They sang holiday songs, distributed homemade cards, and engaged in joyful conversations with the residents. Trenton Scalabrin, a fourth grade student, delighted everyone by playing Silent Night on the piano. He stole the show ❤

What a wonderful experience! Darryen Noel from Mrs. Wilson’s class called Mrs. Gruszka, Northport Media Specialist and Young Authors Program Coordinator on TEAMS recently. Northport K-8 sixth grade students in Melynda Slater’s Critical Thinking classes have spent the last five weeks honing critical research skills using Environmental Studies as the theme.Students used all aspects of research skills building to construct a superhero who could solve many of the dilemmas facing some of Earth’s most serious concerns. Some of the topics students researched were global warming, oil spills, recycling, water conservation, fossil fuels and rain forest decimation. Northport K-8 students work diligently to achieve common core standards and the bar for student expectations has been set high. Students are rewarded for results with high grades, good behavior and cooperative learning. Positive Behavior Support, or more commonly known as PBS, is utilized every day at the school. Students recently were rewarded with orange wrist bands and tee shirt day on the sixth grade Dolphin team and the eighth grade Mariners team held a PBS field days event. Third graders from Mrs. Kemp and Miss Schrader’s class visited the Media Center recently. Students selected two or three free books donated by a parent and then selected a library book. Students learned how to use the library and follow the library norms. It was a GREAT visit. 67% of all children from ages 6-17 get their pleasure reading books from the school library. Eighth-grade Northstars students in Mr. Fess’ STEM class have been working hard designing, constructing, and coding their own racecars! The students built and coded their designs using VEX robotics. This is one of many robotics projects these students will complete this year. The students have been studying gear ratios, coding, and mechanical construction prior to this exercise. Each racer was required to have an increased gear ratio for increased speed and a push-to-start button. A tournament was held to determine the fastest car. The lessons of patriotism, love of country and American flag and a healthy respect for our military are lessons that are taught over and over again at Northport VPK-8 School. Every morning, a different student signs up to recite the Pledge of Allegiance over the school intercom. Northport K-8 sixth-grade students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM class performed electrolysis to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen. These students are in the middle of their hydrogen energy unit in their Energy & the Environment curriculum. The students are learning how hydrogen can be used to power different devices. Students will soon create hydrogen-powered prototypes of their own.
