St. Lucie Public Schools Stresses Immunization Compliance

Florida students enrolled in school, whether attending school in-person or virtually, are required to have age-appropriate vaccines with proper documentation on file at the school. Any students without the proper immunization documentation or exemption on file will not be able to start school on August 24th. New Teacher Symposium a Success!

St. Lucie Public Schools held its annual New Teacher Symposium last week.  The District welcomed 213 new teachers!  The symposium, which was held at Ft. Pierce Central High School, engaged new teachers in various small group sessions over the three day event.  A new schedule this year allowed for social distancing and increased the use of technology. St. Lucie Public Schools Delays Start of School Year

St. Lucie Public Schools is delaying the start of the school year by two weeks. The first day of school for students will be on August 24, 2020. Superintendent E. Wayne Gent commented, “The additional two weeks gives time for the conditions in the county to improve and additional time for staff to finalize preparations for the school year. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools (SIS) program has released four parent/caregiver toolkits that includes valuable resources for parents and guardians to use at home with students from Pre-K through high school. Allapattah Teacher Serves as Khan Academy Ambassador

Kenya McGriff is a 7th grade Math teacher at Allapattah Flats K-8 school. In addition to teaching Math, she is an Ambassador for KhanAcademy. As an Ambassador, she encourages other teachers to try the program and is available to answer technical questions that they may have while using it. Live Weekly Webinars for Parents and Educators

The University of South Florida’s Interdisciplinary Center for Evaluation and Intervention (ICEI) is hosting webinars for parents and educators.  The webinars are a series of one-hour weekly webinars to help promote positive behavior in children and youth. The first webinar will be on July 14, 2020. Parents and teachers are invited to join them to learn ways to support behavior in the home setting and to prepare students for their transition back to school in the fall. VPA Specialist to Present at Conference

We are excited to announce that Dr. Karen Crocco, Instructional Specialist for Visual and Performing Arts for St. Lucie Public Schools, has been invited to be a presenter at the 2020 Summer Online Arts Integration and STEAM Conference this year. The Online Conference has inspiring TED-style talks plus hands-on teacher-led workshops. The conference is starting on July 16 and registration is open now at ArtsIntegrationConfernece.com. She will be speaking on the topic of Combined Footing: Building a Solid Foundation for Arts Integration. Make sure to watch on July 16.  

Congratulations to the Class of 2020

This past week, Superintendent E. Wayne Gent, kept his promise by celebrating the Class of 2020 with live in-person graduations at Lawnwood Stadium. The Class of 2020 will go down in history by being the first graduating class to have not one but two graduations.  The first was a virtual graduation in May followed by the graduations held last week. Palm Pointe Project Citizen Entry Advances to National Finals

The Project Citizen Entry from Palm Pointe Educational Research School in Tradition will advance to the national finals of the Project Citizen showcase. Due to the pandemic and related school closures, students submitted digital entries describing their selected problem and public policy solutions. Students also recorded presentations sharing details of their project-based learning model. The Justice Teaching Center at Florida Southern College sponsors the state-level Project Citizen showcase. SLPS Receives Highest Rating In Meeting Requirements of the IDEA

Village Green Bananas Donated to Drive-Thru Mobile Pantry

Bananas harvested from Village Green Environmental Studies School’s permaculture garden will be included in this week’s Drive-Thru Mobile Pantry!  During the school year, the garden provides rich learning opportunities for students about growing food, the geographical origins of plants, and science standards related to the structures, needs, and processes of plants.  Since the bananas are ripening during the summer months, school staff is harvesting them to donate to our community.

SLPS Presents At The Full Sail University Teacher Webinar

Recently Jane Whitaker, Magnet School Coordinator and Laurie Boyer, Magnet School Outreach and Recruitment Specialist, had the opportunity to present a webinar, Getting Started with Esports in partnership with Full Sail University at the Teacher Outreach Webinar.  The session focused their work on getting the Esports Program at Ft. Pierce Westwood Academy up and running. The webinar was a global platform and they had the opportunity to share their journey with educators from Virginia, North Carolina, Canada and India. St. Lucie Public Schools Receives 2020 Communicator Award

The district’s video submission of CTE: Building Futures with Phoenix Metals has been recognized as an Award of Distinction winner.  The video was shot and edited by Steve Devlin, Multimedia Graphic Artist, from the Media Services Department.  The video explores the partnership the District has with Phoenix Metals, a company in St. Lucie County. Students can join the apprentice program at Phoenix Metals directly from participation in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Boot Camp or other CTE programs. SLPS has parked buses at the following locations. The buses are serving as “Wi-Fi Hotspots” so that students can engage in Summer Academic Distance Learning Programs. District issued laptops will connect automatically when in range. Cell phones can connect to “SLPS-BYOD” network.
