Oak Hammock K8 Hosts Mother and Son Dance

Kindergarten through third-grade boys enjoyed a night out with their moms at the Mother/Son Dance that took place in the cafeteria at Oak Hammock K8 School. They enjoyed a nice dinner with mom, a variety of crafts, and picture-taking while dancing the night away. Both sons and moms had a memorable time. The 2014 Oak Hammock Spelling Bee was held recently, with 18 students representing grades 4 through 8 participating. Congratulations to all contestants! Eighth grade student Emily Fortin, left, is the Oak Hammock Spelling Bee Champion, while fifth grade student Kyle Kierst is the winner for grades K-5.

Oak Hammock K8 Helps with Hurricane Ian Relief

Oak Hammock teachers, students, and families came together to bring hurricane relief to students in need at Mariner Middle School on the west coast of Florida. We were able to donate sneakers, sandals, jeans, shirts, and sweaters for their students.

Oak Hammock K8 First Grade Students Performs the “Unity Tree”

        In a world where dogs and cats are at odds with each other, a kitty and puppy show that friendship can change everything! The first-grade students did an excellent job performing the Unity Tree. Mrs. Allen and the students worked tirelessly preparing for this performance and the students rocked the house.

Oak Hammock K8 Civics Family Engagement Night

Students and families participated in Oak Hammock K-8’s Civics Engagement Night. Mr. Sparacio and Mrs. Garcia presented information to families and students on what to expect out of the Civics course as well as the Civics EOC. Students and their parents/guardians engaged in a friendly competition to review content and material taught in the Civics course. They learned about resources and strategies to be successful on the Civics EOC.    

Oak Hammock K8 Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Night

Hispanic Heritage Night at Oak Hammock K8 was a huge success. Students and families enjoyed viewing a Hispanic exhibition, eating Hispanic food from the food trucks, dancing, and creating crafts that represent the Hispanic culture. Students of Oak Hammock K8 Leveled Up learning the Hispanic Heritage as they leveled up success.

Oak Hammock K8 Bucket Band

The 3rd-grade students at OHK8 practiced music in resource with Tiffany Allen, the music teacher. They discussed instruments both traditional and non-traditional. They selected buckets as their first instrument lesson due to the school’s Bucket Band program returning in the spring. Students read and clapped rhythms before using their instruments. The next step to their success was having the ability to stay together as a group and control their volume to make themselves a part of a group performance. Oak Hammock K-8 Students Train the Mind and Body While Focusing on Students’ Well-Being

Students in Coach Branim’s physical education classes are learning about the importance of having a physically fit mind and body. All students, on campus and MySchool, start each class with warm-up exercises. Coach Branim reminds students, when your body is active, you feel better physically and mentally. Students are learning warm-ups activities that allow the blood in their body to flow, this provides for better movement and brain function. Simple exercise movements are incorporated with each lesson to help students feel comfortable and relaxed. Oak Hammock K-8 Students Raise Autism Acceptance

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Oak Hammock K-8 students learn during SEL about Autism Awareness and Acceptance. Students in the 7th Grade Raptors team worked collaboratively, applying their SEL skills they have learned throughout the school year, to create an Autism Awareness Mosaic. Students also wrote a fact or a quote to help raise awareness and acceptance for individuals on the Autism Spectrum. The 7th Grade Raptors pod wore blue to help raise awareness and acceptance for individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

Oak Hammock K-8 Students Inspire at April School Board Meeting

Oak Hammock K-8 is incredibly proud of our 6th Grade World History students, who recently represented our school with excellence at the April School Board meeting. The students performed a powerful poem that was collaboratively written by Ms. Madera’s 6th grade classes in recognition of our annual Holocaust Survivor Visit, held in March. The poem reflects historical understanding, empathy, and respect, and was originally prepared as part of this meaningful learning experience. Students on the 7th Grade Raptors Team in Mr. Sparacio’s Civics class participated in a review on the Blooket platform. Students are engaged in a gamified learning platform where teachers host games through question sets. Blooket is an exciting new take on the modern classroom review game. It aims to match action with education to create the ultimate learning experience! Blooket is used as a trivia and review tool that allows educators to “level up classroom engagement”. Oak Hammock K-8 Students Discover Government at Work

Students in Ms. Tallman’s second grade class at Oak Hammock K-8 learned how to summarize a reading passage to build knowledge about the government from their weekly text.  Students collaborated with their group to identify relevant key elements that allowed them to answer detailed questions about the passage and identify the story elements. Students achieved their learning goal and were able to incorporate the text vocabulary to make oral and written elaboration about our government at work.

Oak Hammock K-8 Students Deliver A Powerful Message Against Bullying

Aligned with the Oak Hammock K-8 implementation of Love and Logic strategies and the Anti-Bullying campaign for October, four students from 5th – 8th Grade collaborated, to deliver a positive message displayed on the school fencing, visible to teachers, students and community members. The students were given a task to complete, they problem solved and demonstrated exemplary teamwork as they worked together to create a wonderful exhibit. Recently, students in one of our classrooms at Oak Hammock K-8 enjoyed a unique and engaging reading experience as the room transformed into the Martin Café Coffee House. This creative lesson marked an exciting instructional shift toward independent first reads of grade-level texts. The coffeehouse experience was thoughtfully designed to support students in building reading stamina, confidence, and independence. During this time, students practiced reading complex texts independently while applying key strategies they have been developing all year—such as annotating, marking the text, and thinking deeply about meaning. Oak Hammock K-8 STEAM Program Awarded Grant

Angela Flynn, Oak Hammock K-8 STEAM teacher, received a $500 grant from Aldi Smart Kid Program to fund engineering design materials, circuity and technology resources for the new STEAM program. The fourth-grade students explore the engineering design process this week by creating and designing a standing boat using only one sheet of paper, tape and scissors. Students were engaged in experimental learning by inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking.  

Oak Hammock K-8 Sponsors A Chef Boyardee Food Drive to Support Local Food Pantry

Creating social awareness and helping underprivileged individuals and families in need are the things Oak Hammock K-8 students are learning as they sponsor their annual food drive for Grace Packs. Students from Mr. Sparacio’s 7th Grade Civics class are understanding the importance of giving back to the community by preparing the collections boxes to be placed throughout the school and classrooms for the Chef Boyardee themed food drive. Oak Hammock K‑8 proudly participated in this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade, showcasing our school spirit, student leadership, and commitment to honoring Dr. King’s legacy of service and unity. Our Operation Osprey students—an Air Force–based citizenship program sponsored by Ms. Bozzo—represented Oak Hammock with excellence as they carried the United States Flag and our school banner throughout the parade route. Oak Hammock K-8 Second Grade Students Discovery of Biomes

Oak Hammock second grade classes had lots of fun exploring the different biomes. Students learned important facts about their favorite animals by engaging in research activities to recreate the animal’s habitat, identify the specific community of vegetation and wildlife. The students created their own habitat at home as a family project and wrote an informational piece in class based upon their research.  All students had the opportunity to present, explore and learn about the habitat of many different animals. OHK-8 Promotes Bullying Prevention

Oak Hammock K-8 School Promotes Bullying Prevention with a Bulletin Board Decorating Contest! October was National Bullying Prevention Month. To celebrate, each elementary grade group and middle school team at Oak Hammock K-8 School participated in a bulletin board decorating contest with a theme of Bullying Prevention.
