Third through fifth grade students at Savanna Ridge Elementary participated in a recent school spirited pep rally. Third grade students lead the 4th and 5th graders in a remix song about taking on the challenge of the FCAT and passing it with no problem! Each grade level came in their designated class T-shirt and showed their spirit through a friendly competition on the song they learned. Students in Mr. Lewis’ class are learning about the role bees and other living and non-living things have in pollination. Using the resource “Mystery Science” they received a real-world lesson on what pollination is and how it happens. To make the concept stick, they created their own model flowers, complete with pollen dusters, pollen, and a “sticky” stigma. Students then created their own “pollinators” out of pipe cleaners. In the lesson, they learned that pollen has to spread from one flower to another to be pollinated. So students worked with a partner to have their bees pollinate each other’s flowers. … Read More
Representatives from school districts in Florida and Georgia recently visited Savanna Ridge Elementary to see enthusiastic teachers implementing Document Based Questions (DBQs). The students were engaged as teachers walked them through the process of analyzing documents and making inferences to answer the question, “Jamestown: Why did so many colonists die?” The visitors participated in a debriefing session following their classroom observations, and were impressed by the level of engagement from teachers and students. Students from Keiser University came to Savanna Ridge Elementary last week to read to students in Penny LaCorte’s classroom as part of a partnership between the school and Keiser as an ongoing support system. The 15 Keiser students had a unique assignment for their Speech/Communication class — to create a short children’s story and practice their public speaking skills by sharing their work to a group of students. The Keiser students supported the primary classrooms during the reading block. They shared their stories during read aloud time and served as “live” centers to work with students in small groups. Second grade students at Savanna Ridge Elementary School in Kristi Collins’ classroom who reach their reading goals earned dog tags to show how many points they earned on Scholastic Reading Counts. The students are given the opportunity to read and take assessments online to show their progress. Each time students take the assessment, they earn more points and are awarded the next level dog tag. The points start at 25 and go up to 250. Many students are at the 100 point level and some have even reached the max of 250! The students look forward to getting the dog … Read More
Students at Savanna Ridge Elementary enjoyed celebrating Literacy Week 2015 with Books, Bingo and Baked Ziti night. Students and families came out for a delicious baked ziti dinner and played multiple rounds of Bingo. There were many smiling faces as students were able to come up on stage and pick a book of their choice after winning!
Students at Savanna Ridge Elementary raised money during a recent PTO fundraiser whereby the winners wore turkey costumes for the day. Mr. Clements (5th grade teacher) and Mrs. Fletcher (2nd grade teacher) were good sports and wore turkey costumes for the day since they were the ones who raised the most money for the fundraiser. They are pictured with the SRE Morning News Team members and Savanna Ridge’s PTO President Ericka Goyes after they announced it on the Morning News Show.
Second grade students at Savanna Ridge Elementary partnered with Publix to help make Mother’s Day special for their loved ones. Publix brought cakes to Savanna Ridge and helped second graders decorate them as a Mother’s Day sweet treat. Thank you to Tina and Christine from Publix for assisting our students.
Dante Nurse, a third grader at Savanna Ridge Elementary, was recognized as one of the top 500 Classworks All-Star students for their excellent usage and high scores in Reading and Math for Spring 2015. We are so proud of our All-Star!
Student Council members at Savanna Ridge helped serve meals at Matthews Café of Grace Way Village on Sunday. They provide a healthy hot meal, every Sunday from 5:00-6:00 p.m. for those in need. What a great way for our students to show the community they care by helping others.
Staff at Savanna Ridge Elementary enjoyed supporting Relay for Life at the Annual Walk at Tradition Stadium in St. Lucie West. Staff members enjoyed taking part in various activities throughout the year to fund-raise for the school Relay for Life team such as Coins for Cancer.
Kindergarten students in Mrs. Christopher’s Kindergarten class at Savanna Ridge Elementary were excited for their first day of school. Mrs. Christopher welcomed them with open arms and enjoyed taking a first day of school picture to capture the special day!
The “Writing Wizard” James Dean recently helped prepare students at Savanna Ridge Elementary School for the annual FCAT Writes standardized test. Dean, a representative from Thinking Maps, has been diligently working with the teachers and students in preparation for the writing test. The day consisted of students creating magic wands, wizard hats, and hearing a presentation to help reinforce the material they learned for the test. In celebration of Grandparents Day, SRE welcomed Grandparents and Caring Adults to muffins and activities in their little Cranes’ classroom. Each classroom provided guests with entertainment varying from songs, read-alouds, to performances and crafts. SRE was excited to host this event and looks forward to many more family events this year!
Savanna Ridge Elementary hosted our Fall Math Competition for grades K-5. Students in each grade level participated in the competition filled with grade-level math skill questions. Students enjoyed competing against their classmates and look forward to our upcoming Spring Math Competition.
Students enjoyed bringing their fathers and important male role models to Savanna Ridge Elementary’s “Donuts with Dads” as part of the Million Father March initiative throughout the county. Over 80 male role models came out to enjoy donuts and sign pledges. We were ecstatic to see the pride and smiles on each child’s face as they entered school with their fathers.
Kindergarten students had an enriching experience at the 4-H farm, where they explored their five senses and interacted with various farm animals. The students were thrilled to have the opportunity to touch and learn about these animals in a hands-on environment.
Savanna Ridge Elementary had an exciting week of activities for this year’s Literacy Week. Students participated in buddy reading, where they were paired up with other students and read together. They also had engaging conversations about books while enjoying a snack during “chew and chat.” Families were invited to the school for “Books and Baked Ziti Night,” where parents participated in literacy stations where they learned how to incorporate reading at home, valuable online resources, and how to utilize our print rich environment. Students in Mrs. Jones’ first grade class learned about Hispanic Heritage from Mrs. Rivera, ESOL paraprofessional. She taught students about Hispanic culture and traditions while students enjoyed a hands on learning experience creating their own pinatas!
