White City Elementary is partnering with the community. The residents of the Lake Forest Park Villa Association provided a lobster dinner to support White City Elementary School. A special thank you goes out to the Lake Forest Park Villa Association for supporting White City Elementary. Proceeds will be used to purchase school supplies for the teachers and students of White City Elementary.
White City Elementary School in St. Lucie County, has a great after school workout for students, says Katrina Gonzalez, Wellness Champion. Students meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30. They have over 53 students signed up so far. The hour starts out with a warm up that might include pushups, toe touches, jumping jacks, stretching and running laps. White City Elementary had a successful virtual family night that included a prize wheel, the wave, and lots of smiles. WCE’s Social Emotional Learning committee collaborated with the SLPS SEL department to host the virtual event on Teams. Eighty participants attended the event to learn about Social Emotional Learning at WCE and how to reinforce skills at home. Thank you to our community partners, Chick-Fil-A, Applebee’s, Golden Corral, and Super Play USA, for sponsoring our giveaways.
Grade 5 students at White City Elementary are learning about different forms of energy. Mr. Lewis provides hands-on learning opportunities for his students as they investigate and generate a hypothesis.
White City Elementary had a great turnout for our Million Father March – “Donuts for Dads” this morning. We had close to 70 parents bring their children to school and have donuts with them. We gathered 41 pledges with others pending that were taken home and promised to send back. Attached are some pictures that show our parents and students in the cafeteria with their children.
The walls were bursting at the seams with the nearly two hundred students and parents who attended White City Elementary School’s Math/Science Night and Scholastic Book Fair last Tuesday, December 8th. Fun was had by all as they ate dinner, played math games, shopped for books, and finished the evening with a sweet treat of a science activity with Mr. Lewis, our Teacher of the Year. All families took home a deck of cards as a door prize to practice the math games they learned.
White City Elementary kindergartners had a special visitor from the community share about her cultural heritage. Mrs. Yatabe grew up in Japan near Tokyo. The students learned about Japanese customs and traditions and compared and contrasted them with American customs and traditions. The students also learned about origami and made their own samurai helmet! They tried the origami samurai hat on a stuffed Pokemon beanie baby. She concluded the lesson by writing the word “dream” using Japanese symbols and helped each student to write their own name in Japanese.
Students in Mrs. Irby’s and Mr. Tuner’s Kindergarten classes got a special visit in honor of World Read Aloud Day (February 24, 2016). Using Skype video calling technology, picture book author Stacy McAnulty read aloud from her newest book Excellent Ed. Students were able to ask questions and have them answered by the author. She then gave book recommendations to the students. A fun, engaging, time was had by all!
The Kindergarten students at White City Elementary School read books and learned about Native American Indians while studying a unit on People and Events of Now and Long Ago. The students were able to make their own vest and head dress decorating them with Native American symbols to wear to our Thanksgiving meal in the cafeteria.
White City Elementary is a school which has 100% of its students receiving both free breakfast and free lunch based on the poverty level of our families. But often, when they go home, there is little or no food to eat. These families have been impacted by loss of jobs, illness or choosing to pay a utility bill over a food bill because of necessity. White City Elementary School had an explosive night of fun and exploration at Kaboom! Science Family Night! Family Science Nights engage students, families, and teachers in the process of scientific inquiry through hands-on activity-based stations. Students and families immersed themselves in 15 different hands-on science activities and experiments including a Kaboom live show all about the states of matter and physical and chemical changes. First graders in Kathleen Saunders’ class at White City Elementary celebrated success by being inducted into the Captains’ Club. These hard working students have already mastered the first grade words required for the year. Each student received a captain’s hat and is already working on a new goal. Kristin Helser, a local attorney practicing civil law, recently visited White City Elementary with her mother. The two guests addressed fifth grade students about the laws governing our state. Their commitment to helping the students of St. Lucie County is certainly valuable to our community and we are glad to have them as part of our White City family. Fifth graders enjoyed a trip back in time to the 11th century. They were able to experience the living conditions, weapons, housing, and village life of the Medieval Times.
Parent Night for Action 100 was a big success with more than 40 students and approximately 30 parents. Thank you Wildcats for supporting our students and families.
At White City Elementary classes researched and created display boards highlighting key facts about their country. Students were able to compare and contrast information as they conducted research using print and digital sources to extend their learning.
White City Elementary ‘s fourth graders visited St. Augustine on Saturday to conclude their year-long study of Florida history. Students were able to see history come to life as they visited the famous Castillos de San Marcos Fort and toured the city where explorers such a Menendez and Ponce de Leon once settled.
Third grade teachers at White City Elementary wore orange for Unity Day – Standing Up Against Bullying!
Miss Dewey’s classroom won a grant for Reflex Math Fact Fluency program. The students have been using the program now for a week and are so eager for math time. Reflex is game-based and highly motivational so students enjoy the learning process. Reflex helps students of all ability levels to develop fluency with their basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
