Lakewood Park Elementary School students and families recently enjoyed Student Led Conferences, where students can show, with examples, their learning to their parents who can then see and experience materials and activities that students engaged in during the school day. Awards are presented during the evening event, such as for perfect attendance, the Kids at Hope Award, and honor roll. Parents may also see PowerPoint presentations outlining their child’s future goals, while teachers enjoy observing the interaction among all active participants. Second grade students at Allapattah Flats K-8 School were treated with a very special guest visitor recently. Former Allapattah Flats principal Patti Heffelfinger visited the school and read the popular holiday story “The Polar Express” to the students. After listening to the story, students completed a project to show the sequence of events that occurred throughout the book. Village Green Environmental Studies School welcomed some very special guest readers during Literacy Week. We had a blast having special readers who filled our classrooms with stories and joy. Amongst our special guests, Village Green had the honor of having Sheriff Richard R. Del Toro Jr. help us celebrate Literacy Week and partake in the activities. Frances Peyton, meteorologist from WPTV, came to Village Green on Tuesday, October 29th to converse with all fifth-grade students about their current science topic on Weather and Climate (Unit 3), which is taught by Dr. Jacqueline Venzen and Dr. Thomas Gay. Ms. Peyton and our students were very engaged in a myriad of topics such as the formation of clouds, climate, weather, hurricanes, high-and low-pressure systems, and a variety of other climate and weather-related topics. What started out as a routine drop by visit to observe Oak Hammock first grade teacher Joy West teach Common Core writing has turned into a lasting friendship between students, teacher and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell. The Speakers Bureau Special Guest Speaker at Samuel S. Gaines Academy K-8 this month was Mr. Alex Oge, where he is also the Assistant Principal. The students and staff at the Pace Center for Girls welcomed Mrs. Wydee’a Wilson, the Chief Probation Officer for Circuit 19, and radio host for the Pay It Forward show on 104.5 the Flame as a guest speaker in the Speakers Bureau series. Mr. Johnson spoke about the power of education and its importance. He recounted his experiences of growing up poor and shared that he lived in the projects. The Speakers Bureau Special Guest Speakers at Ft. Pierce Westwood High School this month were Mr. Nick Mimms, Ft. Pierce City Manager, and Mr. Joseph Smith, St. Lucie Count Clerk of Courts. Mr. Mimms and Mr. Smith encouraged the students by letting them know that despite road blocks and opposition, continue to work hard and dream big. Dr. Donna Mills also spoke to the students about the importance of paying it forward.

Dan McCarty Middle School students and staff welcomed Attorney Lorenzo Williams of Gary, Williams, Parenti and Finney Law Firm as a guest speaker in the 2016-2017 Speakers Bureau series. Mr. Williams emphasized lessons taught to him by his father and lessons that he, in turn, imparted to his four children. He introduced the acronym “HOW” and went on to explain the meaning of each letter. “H” stands for honesty, “O” represents obedience, and “W” signifies work. He encouraged students to practice all three for success.
Antravious Soleyn, a recent graduate from Fort Pierce Central High School and member of the poetry club, was one of the honored guests at a recent Speakers Bureau event at Dale Cassens Educational Complex. His positive command of the language and poetic verse captivated students as he recited a poem that he wrote. Guest speaker Mr. Tony Barnes, SLC NAACP President and Fort Pierce City Director of Purchasing, also spoke to students about his love for sports as a youth and because he was so good at playing football, he thought he was the man. Mr. DeVoshay Johnson, the IT Manager for Fort Pierce City Hall, helped to kick off the 2016-2017 Speakers Bureau series with his presentation to students and staff at Dale Cassens Educational Complex. Through sharing his life story, he emphasized to students the need to understand that true success comes from within. Mr. DeVoshay also stressed that the choices students make will determine their success in life, and he shared the value in accepting help from others.
Samuel S. Gaines Academy 7th grade students and staff welcomed Mr. Raphael Sanchez, the Executive Director of Human Resource for the St. Lucie Public Schools, as a guest speaker in the Speakers Bureau series.
