Forest Grove Middle School Staff Strengthen Instruction Through Gradual Release

Forest Grove Middle School’s instructional staff recently participated in a professional learning session focused on enhancing the quality of classroom instruction. Led by Ms. Barriner and Ms. Nichols, the training highlighted the importance of modeling think‑alouds and using active processing strategies to support students’ cognitive understanding. Teachers explored how demonstrating their own thinking helps students better grasp complex skills and concepts.

A central focus of the session was the “I Do” component of the Gradual Release of Responsibility model. Presenters emphasized that this step is essential because it provides clear, structured guidance and can be incorporated at any point in a lesson—especially when students need step‑by‑step procedural support.

This professional learning opportunity reinforced Forest Grove Middle School’s commitment to strong instructional practices and continuous growth. Staff members left with practical strategies they can immediately apply to strengthen student learning across all content areas.
