Congratulations to Margeaux McKinney for her District 9 overall first place win for the Florida Retired Educators Association annual 5th grade essay contest. She was recognized at the FREA luncheon today at the Heathcote Botanical Gardens and awarded writing items to inspire her continued interest in writing. This is the third consecutive year that a Northport Rising Star student has taken first place! Mrs. Tredor was also recognized for this achievement.

The future is bright! Students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM classes created laser security systems today as part of their Laser and Photonics unit. Students are learning about reflection, refraction and the use of lasers in fiberoptic cable as well as their application in multiple career fields.
St. Lucie West Centennial High School students recently donated $2,500 to New Horizons of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee to support mental health and addiction recovery programs for children and adolescents. The funds were raised during CENTennial Cares Week, a campaign promoting compassion and kindness in tribute of the students and staff that lost their lives last year at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. You may be hearing buzz around the District and are asking yourself, what is a Tower Garden? Tower Gardens are a vertical, aeroponic growing system, compact in design, and contain a closed-loop technology system. This technology allows you to grow up to 20 vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers in less than three square feet – indoors or outdoors. Because this system allows you to grow plants indoors using special grow lights, with no dirt, we have incorporated hands-on learning into our curriculum in collaboration with Child Nutrition Services and the ESE Department. Congratulations to Fort Pierce Central High School Senior Laura Haggerty! Laura was honored on Senior Day for her academic and athletic accomplishments. With 4 Years Varsity Soccer and 3 Years Varsity Tennis, Laura will graduate this May from FPCHS with a 5.58 weighted GPA, and 3.98 unweighted GPA. She will also graduate from IRSC with her AA degree on May 2, 2019. Laura plans to attend the University of Florida in the fall to study engineering. Congrats Laura! Once a Cobra, Always a Cobra!
Mr. Morales, a local peach farmer, and Sandy White, representative from Titan Farms located in South Carolina, partner in marketing Florida grown peaches, and made their first presentation to a first grade audience at Lakewood Park Elementary. The first graders were excited to learn how the peaches grow and created pictures to show how Florida peaches look. As a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program school, students were able to sample some of the peaches grown on the farm Mr. Morales operates in St. Lucie County, just a few miles away from Lakewood Park Elementary. What a yummy presentation!
In a competitive academic competition, local high school teams competed for top honors and individual team members vied for a seat on the prestigious Team St. Lucie – an elite six-member team that represented St. Lucie Public Schools at the 34th Annual Commissioner’s Academic Challenge. Maria Battaglino Hernandez, Madeleine Sosa, Callie Zheng (Lincoln Park Academy); Ryan Lu (Treasure Coast High School); Alan Senkus (St. Lucie West Centennial); and Matthew Zoll (Fort Pierce Westwood) accumulated an impressive number of individual points in this year’s local tournament to secure a seat on Team St. Lucie. Northport community is so proud of our sixth grade Sharks and our seventh grade Stingrays who earned the Principal’s Honor Roll, A Honor Roll, B Honor Roll, and Perfect Attendance. The third nine weeks is always the most difficult, and these students worked hard to achieve. Northport K-8 GiveBack2Kids Student of the Month show citizenship, outstanding progress in awesomeness, and are all around GREAT students! We thank our partners in education, James Monds and David Gornitzky (GiveBack2Kids CEOs) who help us honor positive attitude and remarkable behavior. This is our final GB2K award for the 2018-2019 school year. All students selected this year for this award and their families will be invited to an honorary banquet in May. In Ms. Bonilla’s VPK class at Mariposa Elementary, students have been discussing what sentences are, the parts of a sentence, and how to build a sentence. Students were given a sentence on a strip, completed some shared reading, and went around their tables reading each of the sentences. The students were able to pick up on the pattern of “I can” and decode words by looking at a visual. Afterwards, they rebuillt their sentences since they had been deconstructed. On Saturday April 13, 2019, Port St. Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s drill team took 32 cadets to compete at the State Drill Meet at George W. Jenkins High School in Lakeland, Florida. The drill team competed in five regulation events: Female Armed and Unarmed Platoon, Male Unarmed and Armed Squad, and Male Unarmed Platoon. The Jaguar Battalion Drill team also competed in six exhibitions: Female Exhibition Squad and Platoon along with Male Exhibition Squad and Platoon. The students of Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies were excited to raise money to benefit the March of Dimes. Students were asked to make donations and they were able to choose a bucket in which to place their donations. Each bucket represented a different administrator on campus. The administrators’ buckets with the most money received a pie in the face! Students could also purchase raffle tickets to be chosen as a pie thrower. Thank you to everyone at SGAET who donated to this worthy cause!
The St. Lucie County Fire District brought firefighters and fire trucks to visit a class at Fort Pierce Central High School. The students spent the afternoon learning about fire safety, finding out what it takes to be a firefighter, and exploring a fire truck. Thank you to SLCFD for making the visit so enjoyable for our students!
Northport K-8 middle school art class students created an art project with the theme Adopt Don’t Shop in hopes of raising awareness of the adoption for cats and dogs. Students created a colorful background collage using reused paper, creating a new purpose for the paper. The collage served as a symbolic gesture for animals because those who are adopted gain a new purpose in life. On Saturday, May 4, Village Green Environmental Studies School will host a community Environmental Studies Exposition. From 10AM to noon, students will serve as tour guides for guests and will provide information about the school’s permaculture garden, raised bed gardens, astronomy night activities, solar energy kits, and weather stations.
Northport K-8 Culinary Arts students participated in the 2nd Annual Culinary Cook Off. Students were asked to design and produce a dessert recipe using all food commodities from our food services or cafeteria. Northport students created a cake using 51% wheat flour and low sugar standards set by the USDA. The inaugural Male Youth Summit at Performance Based Preparatory Academy was a collaboration between the Bethune-Cookman University’s Male Development Institute and the Omicron Tau (Treasure Coast) Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Male students in grades six through twelve attended this event and participated in breakout sessions covered topics such as: dressing for success, grades, mental health, and time management.
