The district winners in three categories — Youth, Adult, and Senior — volunteers for the year were honored at the February 14, 2012 St. Lucie County School Board meeting. The Youth Volunteer of the Year is Taylor Currie serving at Floresta Elementary School; the Adult Volunteer of the Year, Priscilla Vitagliano serves at Garden City Early Learning Academy; and the Senior Volunteer of the Year, William Arnold who serves at Northport K8 School, is pictured with, from left, Deputy Superintendent Sandy Wolfe, School Board chairman Carol Hilson, Arnold, Northport volunteer coordinator Lynne Gruszka, and principal Glenn Rustay.

Northport K-8 School Senior Volunteer of the Year and district representative for Senior Volunteers Bill Arnold was one of the shining stars of the recognition event planned by district volunteer coordinator Susan Helms-Smith.  Mr. Arnold’s work at Northport K-8 was highlighted and backdropped by a wonderful series of video clips of the work he has accomplished with the Northport Veteran Partners in Education program held at the school.  Mr. Arnold and all the veterans were celebrated with a standing ovation. Principals from St. Lucie County Public Schools annually donate toys for the holidays for the Boys and Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County clubhouses. The annual campaign was initiated by retired longtime principal Charles Cuomo many years ago.
