At the School Board Meeting on May 27, 2014, PBIS District Coordinator Robert O’Neill presented a Bronze Award for the 2012-2013 Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Model Schools to Bayshore Elementary. A PBIS Model School is one that has met specific criteria and has reported innovative, creative and functional ways of supporting PBIS in their school. Jennifer Avellino, Assistant Principal of Weatherbee Elementary, accepted the Gold Award for the 2012-2013 PBIS Model School at the School Board Meeting on May 27, 2014. Five schools from St. Lucie County were recognized as PBIS Model School for the State. Along with Weatherbee are, Bayshore Elementary, Oak Hammock K-8, Palm Pointe Educational Research School and West Gate K-8, each receiving the Bronze Award. We are very proud of the significant increase in writing proficiency. Our students and our teachers have worked very hard this year to make this happen. If you notice, our percent proficient increased in each grade level tested. While the state saw a decline in 4th Grade, our percent proficient increased by 7 percent to 55%, which exceeds the state average of 53%. In 8th Grade, our percent proficient jumped 9 percent to 56% – while the state only saw an increase of 2%. The Grand Parade is the capstone event of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Commemorative Celebration. Once again this year, all of our schools participated in the parade. At the April 22, 2014 School Board Meeting, representatives from the Commemorative Celebration Committee presented trophies to the winning schools. In the Elementary Category, first place went to Fairlawn Elementary, second place went to Savanna Ridge Elementary, and third place went to Village Green Elementary. On April 22, 2014, the 100th Anniversary of the Cooperative Extension Service Resolution was read by Kathryn Hensley and adopted by the School Board. May 8, 2014 marked the centennial of the signing of the Smith-Lever Act which established Cooperative Extension, known in the state of Florida as UF/IFAS Extension and Florida A and M University Extension, the nationwide transformational education system operating through land-grant universities in partnership with federal, state and local government. SLPS Assistant Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell presented Mrs. Joy West’s first grade students with some thought-provoking questions that inspired some important discussion after he read the story “Hey, Little Ant.” To squish or not to squish? What would you do if the ant you were about to step on looked up and started talking? After Dr. Rendell left, students became real life authors and wrote opinion pieces identifying the reasons they gave to support their text.

Lincoln Park Academy senior, Luke Muller, has been selected as one of twelve to compete in the 2014 International Sailing Federation Youth World Championship Team Regatta in Tavira, Portugal, on July 12-19, 2014. Luke is a member of the Lincoln Park Academy International Baccalaureate program, has been nominated and appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and has been accepted for admission to Stanford University. At the April 22nd School Board Meeting, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation provided a $5,000 grant to the St. Lucie County Education Foundation in support of its Working Together for Success Grant Program.
