St. Lucie Public Schools is proud to announce that Morningside Elementary’s (MSE) Odyssey of the Mind Team is advancing to the World Finals competition slated for May 23 – May 26 in Ames, Iowa. Morningside’s team will convene with approximately 850 other teams for what is deemed to be the largest creative problem-solving competition. Northport K8 and Port St. Lucie High School Culinary Teams delivered up gourmet tastes that delighted those who attended the Taste of St. Lucie Big Brothers Big Sisters event. Northport’s mini pineapple upside down cakes disappeared as fast as the Port St. Lucie High School’s Crawfish Bisque and Boom-Boom Wontons. Our student chefs were outstanding!

Ms. Kelly Owens, FSBA Leadership Services Consultant, presented Dr. Donna Mills with a Certified Board Member (CBM) distinction award at the April 24 SLPS Board Workshop.  The Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) presents this distinction to its members within their respective districts.  Congratulations, Dr. Mills!

St. Lucie Public Schools Child Nutrition Services Department would like to congratulate Brandon Parks and Shannon Sears of Fort Pierce Central High School’s Culinary Program for winning the first Student Culinary Cook-Off. Their entree, Boom Boom Chicken Bake, will be featured on the 2018-2019 school lunch menu. The purpose of the event was for student chefs to create enticing entrees for the School Meals Program following the USDA guidelines for the National School Lunch Program. Students learn about the economy in a fun and creative way by participating in the FCEE annual Economic Poster Contest. Each year, approximately 300 students gain a better understanding of our economic system through their participation in this exciting competition. Students learn a basic economic concept and then use their creativity and art skills to demonstrate their understanding of the concept in a colorful drawing. Teachers submit their entries in both the fall and spring semester, after which 12 winners are selected (each term). Entries are judged on originality, creativity, and accuracy of concept. The Office of Teaching and Learning is excited to offer a summer training on Fostering a Growth Mindset.  It will focus on how to help students believe they can succeed in the classroom.  It is being offered through Canvas online from 6/4 – 7/31.  Participants receive 20 hours in-service credits and it meets ESE recertification.  Register via Frontline at www.mylearningplan.com

District Gathering – fun for all! Members of the St. Lucie Public Schools District Office Staff who are serving at various temporary satellite offices throughout the District since the hurricane flooded the Orange Blossom Business Center had the opportunity to convene at Allapattah Flats for a recent meeting.  Here, information about SLPS’s academic progress and facility updates was shared, a light luncheon was enjoyed, and a challenge to build a district office from sparse materials set the room abuzz with laughter.

The St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce Foundation congratulates the Young Floridian Scholarship Program Winners for the 2017-2018 academic year. The Young Floridian Award was established in 1988 by General Development Corporation to recognize outstanding seniors for achievement and service to their school and community. Young Floridian awards honor one St. Lucie high school senior in 15 academic or extracurricular disciplines.
