STAR Awards are special recognitions for employees who demonstrate outstanding service above and beyond expectations.  At the January School Board Meeting, the District was honored to recognize Mr. Stephen Malpass, a member of the maintenance team. Mr. Lenny Smallacombe of the Elks Lodge #1520 is a powerhouse advocate for students and was honored for spearheading donation efforts for St. Lucie Public Schools students. What started out six years ago as a weekend backpack program for five children has turned into an ever-growing platform of support. Mr. Smallacombe and his fellow lodge members have expanded their weekend food backpack program to hundreds of children, fulfilled special school program needs, provided complementary summer camp opportunities to students, secured grants for literacy projects, and supported students’ family nutrition needs during special times of the year. Sunny Booker, president of the Bluebird Foundation, and director of alternative education for SLPS presented seven middle and high school students with instruments during the January School Board Meeting. Bluebird Education Foundation serves St. Lucie County and provides musical instruments for youth with the goal of helping them pursue musical interests and supporting the love of music.  The Foundation gifted violins, a cello, flute, trombone, and clarinet to students as part of the Recycling in the Key of E (RIKE) initiative in which the Foundation purchases or receives donations of gently used instruments.        

The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) is proud to celebrate January as National Mentoring Month. This nationwide initiative is in its 18th year and is a means of celebrating and promoting the value of mentoring to the students of Florida. FDOE encourages all schools to use the month of January as an opportunity to renew their efforts to recruit and train more mentors. National Mentoring Month 2019 celebrates mentoring and the positive effects it can have on young lives. For the second year, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) boasts a graduation rate above 90 percent with 1.7 percent growth this year landing the District at 91.8 percent – well above the State average. Over 600 St. Lucie Public Schools students received food, clothing, and supplies from generous members of the Elks Lodge #1520 in Fort Pierce. The December 12th delivery schedule started out promising to serve 3 schools, but as donations poured in, the number of schools quickly grew to 13. This growth mirrors the growth in the number of students who benefit from the Elks Backpack Program which supports students throughout the year.    

St. Lucie Public Schools staff visit with the parents of English Learners who attend the English Learning Center at Weatherbee Elementary. The District hosts four different locations through the Title III Program. Parents shared traditional holiday food. They were also serenaded by one of our parents. Norma Miller is the dedicated site manager for this center .

Barnes & Noble of Jensen Beach chose the McKinney Vento Homeless program to be the recipient of the annual Holiday Book Drive this year. In-store customers have purchased over 3,000 new books so far to donate to the program. Every student enrolled in the program received a holiday gift bag that included two brand new books, new socks, school supplies, a hygiene kit, and coloring books for the younger students. Geneva Financial donated over 500 coloring books and crayons, the Treasure Coast Food Bank donated the hygiene items for the kits, and Bombas socks donated over 2,000 pairs of new … Read More

Winter Break begins on Monday, December 24th. 12 Month employees return on Wednesday, January 2nd. Monday, January 7th is a Workday for faculty and staff. Students and staff will resume a regular schedule on Tuesday, January 8th. The Florida Partnership for Healthy Schools, Florida Action for Healthy Kids, Florida Association of District School Superintendents, and Florida Healthy Kids Corporation recognized the District’s honor during the December School Board Meeting. St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) is proud to announce the launch of new science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) and emerging technology programs and makerspaces using LEGO Education solutions, which include curriculum and professional development, in two of the district’s new magnet schools: Creative Arts Academy of St. Lucie (CAST) and Samuel S. Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies (SGAET).
