Registered voters recently received a mail-in ballot.  To ensure your vote counts, it must be mailed by this Friday — April 19th.   This referendum supports teacher pay, safety on our campuses, and mental health services for our children.

The 2nd Annual Student Culinary Cook-Off is a collaboration between Child Nutrition Services and the Career and Technical Education Culinary Arts Program. The purpose of the event is to provide student chefs with the opportunity to create and showcase enticing entrees that their peers would enjoy while following the USDA guidelines for the National School Lunch Program. This year’s champion team is St. Lucie West Centennial High School.  Their winning entree, Braised BBQ Pork Flatbread, will be placed on the school lunch menu for the 2019-2020 school year.  

Emily Utts (Outstanding First Year Teacher for SLPS) is a winner on the field and in the classroom at Fort Pierce Central High. Emily threw the first pitch at Friday’s St. Lucie Mets game. The Five Star School Award was created by the Commissioner’s Community Involvement Council and is presented annually to those schools that have shown evidence of exemplary community involvement. In order to earn Five Star School recognition, a school must show documentation that it has achieved 100 percent of the established criteria in the following categories. On April 10, 2019 Career Source Research Center hosted the 4th Annual Treasure Coast Homeless Veteran Stand down. The Stand Down brings together government agencies, housing providers, nonprofit agencies, and local businesses to connect homeless veterans with permanent and supportive housing, intensive case management, benefits eligibility screening, employment, legal assistance, and mental health services. Veterans are provided with basic needs, such as food, shelter, clothing, hygiene kits, shoes and blankets. Dr. Donna Mills, SLPS School Board Member, was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as April’s Woman of the Month.  Dr. Mills was introduced by her daughter, United States District Court Judge Shaniek Maynard – a past recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Month Award.  This made for a unique pairing for the mother and daughter team to both hold the Chamber’s “Woman of the Month” distinction.
