Miss Petrie’s 1st grade showed their gratitude to veterans by creating thank you cards on Veterans Day.
Samuel Gaines Academy of Emerging Technologies Principal, Keith W. Davis, Sr. and Instructional Coach, Michelle Powers virtually attended an international Microsoft Showcase School Summit on November 3rd and 4th. The focus for the summit was on using Microsoft technology tools and applications for enhancing educational practices and the presentation of innovating ideas that could be brought back to the different attendees’ schools.
St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) partnered with the Economic Development Council (EDC) as an initiative to continue our goals of communicating employment, post-secondary, and scholarship opportunities for our graduating students in St. Lucie Public Schools. This virtual session featured Mr. Wayne Gent (SLPS Superintendent), Mr. Pete Tesch (EDC President), CareerSource Research Coast, Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital (Martin Health), Indian River State College, Keiser University, Lawnwood Medical Center & Heart Institute (HCA), and St. Lucie Medical Center (HCA). The participants included SLPS counselors, graduation coaches, and medical educators.
On Saturday, October 17th the Treasure Coast HS AFJROTC participated in a huge ceremony honoring our veterans along with the Honor Flight organization. Cadets presented our nations colors to kick off the ceremony and then accomplished a flag folding ceremony for the veterans. Congressman Brian Mast made remarks to the veterans as well, and “challenge coins” were presented to all veterans in attendance. Veterans were thrilled with the ceremony honoring their service and appreciated the cadet’s efforts to recognize them.
Ms. Lerman’s kindergarten students are very excited to see bright yellow blossoms on the squash and cucumbers they recently planted.
The Career and Technical Education (CTE) department has been taking its advisory board meetings to the next level. The advisory board members include Educators from the CTE programs, business partners and post-secondary institutions (Indian River State College and Keiser University). The various groups discussed pivoting to the virtual arena for meetings as well as volunteering during the Covid19 pandemic. Level up, CTE! On October 6, Treasure Coast High School AFJROTC cadets volunteered at the Treasure Coast Food Bank. Cadets participated in a “drive up” distribution line to provide food to families and then worked in the Food Bank’s warehouse to sort and prepare food for future distribution. The cadets had a great time helping community members impacted by the pandemic and are proud to continue the unit’s legacy of community service while also adhering to all COVID protocols.
Fort Pierce Westwood students from Dr. Danielle Garcia’s Health Unit Coordinator program, participated in a virtual guest speaker presentation from Epilepsy Florida. Students were very engaged and were able to apply the presentation content to their current lesson. Students in Career and Technical Education programs are still connected to industry and business partners!
The Desk Fairy recently visited Miss Petrie’s first grade classroom at Weatherbee and left a gift on this student’s clean and organized desk! Way to go, Journi!

West Gate K-8 Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Harris, surprised several of her former kinder students during their drive-through high school ceremonies by not only being there to celebrate their achievements, but also to personally hand deliver their diplomas.
West Gate K-8 teachers organized and distributed student items left at school before the closing. Following CDC and district guidelines, teachers practiced social distancing, wore protective masks, and shared some emotional good-byes as parents and students gathered their belongings.
5th Grade teachers were excited to see their students recently as they returned laptops and picked up their belongings. We are proud of our students and all of their hard work and we wish them the best as they move up to middle school.

Recently, Kindergarten teachers Mrs. Guermithe Ogé and Mrs. Esther Jean delivered surprise packages to their students. The children were so excited to receive a visit from their teachers and their teachers were delighted to see them – even if it was from a distance!

In true “Flat Stanley” style, several kindergarten and first grade teachers sent their students ‘Flat Teachers’. This creative gesture was an effort to reach their kids and not only remind them they are thinking of them daily, but also to inspire their students to share their quarantined adventures with their ‘flat teacher’. Students can share their adventures through Canvas, Remind, FlipGrid, and Teams. Mrs. Buehrig, Mrs. Downing, Mrs. Godoy, Mrs. Smith, Ms. Miller, Ms. Harris, and Ms. Jines are all looking forward to the many adventures and stories to come.
Weatherbee 4th grade teacher, Klay Robbins, recently mailed a letter to each of his students to check on their progress in Math, Science, and i-Ready. He included “necklace money” in the correspondence – the classroom currency his students can earn and trade for a variety of beaded necklaces. Many students wrote back and one student, Eduardo, included his photo – he was thrilled to be earning his ‘necklace money” even as he worked virtually!
Second grade teacher, Ms. Faniel, coordinated a class parade so she could have a brief face-to-face interaction with her students. Parents of her class lined up at the school and were escorted by PSLPD for a quick drive-through parade by Ms. Faniel’s home. Students and parents remained in their cars to maintain a safe distance while still getting to see their teacher! Of course, Ms. Faniel made sure to make their drive worth it as she decorated her yard with a large sign and handed out gifts for each of her students.
