Northport students experienced a wonderful and festive time at the annual Port Saint Lucie Rotary Club Christmas party. Students were treated to lunch from the Olive Garden, met Santa Claus and received gifts. Thanks to Diane Crumpton and Tammy Boston for escorting our students.
Northport is so proud to announce our November Navigator of the Month award recipients. The students selected have exhibited all the qualities that our teachers and staff are looking for in a fine student. Integrity, commitment, honor, being a great friend, stopping a bully or understanding and role modeling the word service. We are so proud to celebrate, along with our parents and grandparents and to make sure that our students know what it means to be a great Northport kid! Good job everyone!
Sixth grade students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM class designed and built water turbines as part of their unit on Hydropower. These students are studying various types of alternative energy sources in this course while also learning about the Engineering, Science and Math necessary to harness the energy.
Northport is thrilled to present Cindi Cairo as our Adult Volunteer of the Year for 2019-2020. Cindi has volunteered at Northport for the last three years. She has assisted in the kindergarten and in third-grade. One of the jobs that Cindi helps with at Northport is assisting in small group centers for math. She is innovative in her modeling methods for math. She makes up new games to help children learn multiplication tables. What an absolutely wonderful morning of patriotism and pride at Northport today. Many local veterans came into school to take part in a Veteran’s Panel for students. Mrs. Kemp’s third graders led the program with the Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Renelus and his band played the National Anthem and a rousing rendition of a medley of the songs for each branch of the military. Students in Susan Smith’s class read a poem called “The Veteran’s Blessing.” The veterans spoke eloquently about the importance of teamwork, support, brotherhood, education and most importantly, honor and integrity. What an amazing day at Northport! The school community came together with a unified message against bullying. Parent and PTO president, Kendra Hansard, joined students for the Pledge of Allegiance and PTO vice president, Kristy Ellison, led the students in the Kids at Hope Pledge with a nod to a culture of kindness and antibullying on campus. Students across the campus made posters and banners to promote bullying awareness and voiced a powerful message of care, concern and kindness. Northport Northstar students hosted Port St. Lucie Mayor, Greg Oravec and Major Chris Cicio, Director of Detention for the Sheriff’s Department, in the media center recently. Both men initiated conversations with students about how they handle stress. In order for young people to achieve their potential, we need to recognize that social and emotional learning is a critical element in the educational process. It was an amazing morning of intense learning and even more intense emotions. Northport students were enthralled by Mrs. Tiffany Tredor who played The National Anthem on her violin. Five Northstar 7th grade students served as “Instructional Coaches” and gave students five guiding questions using the 5 W’s of Who, What, Where, When and Why. The drama instructor, Ms. Kim Fields, and her middle school students used a special poem to portray and honor the eight children who perished on 9/11. Third graders from Mrs. Kemp and Miss Schrader’s class visited the Media Center recently. Students selected two or three free books donated by a parent and then selected a library book. Students learned how to use the library and follow the library norms. It was a GREAT visit. 67% of all children from ages 6-17 get their pleasure reading books from the school library. What a smooth opening day at Northport K-8 School. The teachers greeted their new students and parents with smiles, hugs, and high fives. Many thanks to community partners for coming to Northport to welcome parents and families. Their support is vital for a successful school year. Thanks to Vietnam Veterans, Chapter 566; 1 PSL Baptist Church; First United Methodist Church; Assistant PSLPD Police Chief, Richard Del Toro; and our partners at Step Up America for being those first welcoming faces at our school.
Northport is thankful for the love and care offered to students and teachers from the First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie. The church congregation has embraced this Title One school as a mission. Students and teachers are blessed to be the recipients of lunches and breakfasts on teacher planning days and workdays, donations of over 100 fully loaded bookbags, supplies and so much more. The Navigators are thrilled to have so many this organization’s members in place as classroom tutors and adoptive grandparents.
This year, the third annual Northport Faith In Literacy Summer Reading Program is off to a great start. The First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie congregation collected 3,600 new and gently used books to provide students with enough books to start a stack of summer reading books in their homes. Students learned about the importance of summer reading and not letting their skills in reading slide back. They enjoyed selecting ten books each. Northport’s partnership with David Gornitzky and James Monds offers proof in the pudding that we can steer children in the right direction and help them navigate a great course for their futures. The Fire Department visited students in Mrs. Richetti’s, Mrs. Licameli’s, Mr. Patterson’s, and Mrs. D’Argenio’s classes at NPK8 today. The students were able to explore the trucks and speak with the Firefighters about their job. What a great experience for all!
