The 2019 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday was passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis. This sales tax holiday begins Friday, August 2, 2019, and runs through Tuesday, August 6, 2019. The Division of Student Services and Exceptional Student Education in collaboration with Sandy Hook Promise provided a Signs of Suicide (SOS) Training at Indian River State College for school psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, and district leaders. The SOS program uses an educational curriculum to teach students to recognize the symptoms of depression and suicide, and can be implemented by existing school personnel within one class period. Dr. Karen Crocco, SLPS Instructional Specialist for Visual and Performing Arts, was selected to present a session at the Carnegie Hall Summer Music Educator Workshop in New York City. Music educators from across the country came to Carnegie Hall to expand the impact of their work with young musicians. Dr. Crocco’s standing-room-only workshop entitled “Beginning with the End in Mind: Intention in Rehearsal and Assessment” focused on teacher learning to reinvigorate student creativity and musicianship, building a community of peers, and investing in one’s own artistry through creative activities and music-making ensembles.
