Kansas Corn Stem Visits Northport!

Talk about a corny guest speaker! Sixth-grade students in Mr. Fess’ Northstars STEM class received a virtual visit from Bill Johnston of “Kansas Corn STEM.” The students learned all about how Ethanol is made from corn and explored the benefits of using Ethanol when compared to traditional fossil fuels. These students are in the middle of their green-energy unit on Biomass. They are also working on designing and building their own Biomass demonstration projects.

Career and Technical Education Programs Connect with St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office Drone Team

Fort Pierce Westwood students from Ms. Mildred Brown’s Criminal Justice program, Mrs. Ursula Johnson’s Digital Media program, and Mrs. M.E. Musgrave’s Medical program joined the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team for a live presentation.  Students learned about the significance of the drone team to our law enforcement agencies and community, sUAS Part 107 industry certification, and career opportunities after high school.  Sergeant Wes Harbrin organized this event for SLPS students enrolled in these various programs.  Additionally, students preparing for their 911 Telecommunications industry certification exam were able to connect with our local law enforcement business and community partners! … Read More

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team Demonstration with Centennial’s Criminal Justice Students

Representatives from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Drone team hosted a live demonstration for Criminal Justice and Law Academy students from St. Lucie West Centennial High School.  Special thanks to SLPS Criminal Justice Advisory Board member, Sergeant Wes Harbrin from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for setting up this event!  Mrs. Angela Baumgarten’s students were engaged and learned about skills, training, and career options for sUAS industry certification and the connection of drones to the field of law enforcement.  

Mariposa Elementary Celebrates Music and Arts in our Schools Month

Mariposa Elementary is acknowledging student success in Mr. Evans’ class by celebrating Music in our Schools Month. Students are passionately demonstrating their musical skill sets for their teachers, classmates, and families by sharing songs and activities they learned in music class. Students in upper grades share how their younger siblings are singing catchy songs nonstop at home. Meanwhile, some K-2 students are gaining a head-start in the music curriculum through older siblings sharing their wealth of musical knowledge. Northport Celebrates Dr. Seuss

Happy Birthday to our dear Dr. Seuss ? ! Northport celebrated across the campus and virtually. The children in the library read The Lorax and learned all about environmentalism. It has been a GREAT DAY ?@ school. Children celebrated by reading Dr. Seuss books and dressing for the day.

Watercolor Science Models at CAST

CAST sixth grade students in Mrs. Albers’ science class learned about the structures and functions of major organelles of plants and animal cells. Students created a 2D model of a cell using watercolor techniques to illustrate and identify the similarities and differences found within the animal and plant cells.

CAST Integrates Science and Art

CAST seventh grade students in Mrs. Cruz’s science class learned about genes and how they store heredity information. Students drew and designed Punnett Square diagrams. They completed an interactive Heredity web quest, integrating visual arts, technology and science.

Southport Middle School Students Give Thanks to Health Care Workers

Employees of St. Lucie Medical Center were grateful for the uplifting and inspirational cards they received from the sixth grade students at Southport Middle School. Students in Mrs. Richards literacy classes created cards to thank the healthcare workers for their service during these challenging times. The students’ thoughtful words, gestures and support were recognized and deeply appreciated by the hospital staff.  

SLWK8 Students Receive Masks from Local Business

Students from St. Lucie West K-8 School proudly wore their new face masks that were donated from one of their business partners, TJ Maxx in Tradition. They also wrote Thank You notes and cards expressing their gratitude for the fun face coverings. WE LOVE OUR BUSINESS PARTNERS! GO SHARKS! e

Lincoln Park Academy Athletics Continues to Shine at FHSAA State Tournaments

Lincoln Park Academy won three gold medals at State Championships in the Fall and their Winter teams are seeing similar success. The Girls Basketball Team won their 7th District Championship in a row and their first Regional Championship in school history to advance to the State Final Four.  The Lady Greyhounds beat American Heritage in their semifinal appearance and fell short in the Championship game to the #1 team in the nation.  Congratulations to Coach Adams, his staff, and his team for finishing as the Class 4A State Runner-Up. Middle School Artists at Palm Pointe Study Artist Kehinde Wiley

Middle school artists studied the art of Kehinde Wiley for Black History Month.  Kehinde Wiley is most famous for his presidential portrait of Barack Obama. His artwork is known for its unique portraiture style that uses vintage, floral backgrounds paired with an emphasis on the model’s unique style.  Wiley’s paintings are inspired by the old masterpieces by having his models pose like a particular painting of old.  Palm Pointe virtual and traditional artists researched old masterpieces and picked out their favorite to recreate the pose.  Then, keeping with Wiley’s style they found a vintage background and digitally edited their portraiture … Read More

CAST Middle Schoolers Swing Art and Science Together

Middle School students in Mr. Cruz’s Visual Arts class constructed a wooden tripod suspending a plastic bottle holding paint; students were adjusting the nozzle, consistency of the paint, and momentum of the pendulum swing to create elliptical patterns. We can’t wait to see the finished products!

Weatherbee ‘Shines Bright’ At SLC Fair!

Weatherbee Elementary won 1st place for their school display in the 2021 St. Lucie County Fair contest presented by Sunrise Kiwanis Club. Our vision of the theme “Schools Shining Bright Under Carnival Lights” came to life through school-wide collaboration. Every department and grade group at Weatherbee was creatively represented within our fair booth, because our school shines the brightest through teamwork and the support of each other! Way to go Weatherbee!!

Savanna Ridge Students Learn About Pollination

Students in Mr. Lewis’ class are learning about the role bees and other living and non-living things have in pollination. Using the resource “Mystery Science” they received a real-world lesson on what pollination is and how it happens. To make the concept stick, they created their own model flowers, complete with pollen dusters, pollen, and a “sticky” stigma. Students then created their own “pollinators” out of pipe cleaners. In the lesson, they learned that pollen has to spread from one flower to another to be pollinated. So students worked with a partner to have their bees pollinate each other’s flowers. … Read More

Counselors Participate in Virtual Tour for Marine Industry

School and district administrators, counselors, educators, and graduation coaches from St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) participated in a virtual tour focused on the local marine industry.  Representatives from Maverick Boat Group, Freedom Boat Club, Shearwater Marine, and Derecktor Shipyard centered their discussion on employment opportunities and talent recruitment for their respective company.  This information will be shared with SLPS graduating seniors interested in this career pathway.  This ties directly to the Outboard Marine Service Technology program at St. Lucie West Centennial High School led by CTE Educator, Chadd Fleming.  This engaging event was made possible through the collaboration between St. … Read More

Treasure Coast High Hosts Virtual Field Trip to Indian River State College Robotics Lab

Phil Depuy, Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Instructor at Treasure Coast High and his students virtually visited Professors Natalia Chekhovskaya and Paul Godfrey at the IRSC Kight Center for Emerging Technology.  Discussions centered on mechanical, electrical and programming fields specifically Robotics, Photonics, Manufacturing, local employers, and student projects.  Big thanks to Jerry Jacques, President at TCMA and Advanced Machine and Tool for setting up the visit.  Level Up CTE!
