St. Lucie Public Schools’ own Assistant Principal of the Year, Samantha Piscopo, wrote an article featured in the March 7th issue of ASCD Express, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s (ASCD) e-newsletter. Published two to three times a month, this resource seeks to give educators practical, actionable strategies, and information from the most reputable sources—the colleagues and experts working in the education field. On Saturday, March 2, 2019, the Port St Lucie High School Army JROTC Jaguar Battalion’s Drill Team competed in its AREA 3 Regional Drill Meet at Jupiter High School. This is the most important drill meet of the season because it determines if the team can advance to the state competition. Cadets participated in fourteen group events, and we are so proud to say the Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion won 1st place overall and will be moving forward to compete at the state level on April 13th! Treasure Coast High School AFJROTC completed a 15-mile memorial walk/march on Saturday and Sunday, March 2nd and 3rd. The memorial march, entitled a “Bataan Death March” was done to honor those who survived and those who gave their lives in WWII during the fight for control of the Philippines. . After their surrender on the island of Luzon, the Americans were marched to POW camps hundreds of miles away. Many perished in the march. The AFJROTC unit completed a march from TCHS to Veterans Memorial Park and back to the high school to raise awareness in memorial to our WWII heroes. … Read More
Ms. Alyssa Barbieri furnished her 5th grade math students with a diner menu and $20. They practiced adding and subtracting to the hundredths place by selecting three items within their $20 budget – calculating both the cost of the items and the change they would receive back. Whether they chose the most expensive items or elected to spend the least amount possible, they had lots of fun while practicing their math skills!
The Interact Club from Treasure Coast High School reads the book Josh the Baby Otter to kindergarten students at Windmill Point Elementary School. This story is part of a water safety program that teaches children what to do if they fall into a pool.
Sophia Henriquez, Philena Maharaj, and Ms. Savela from Northport K-8 Culinary Program served tasty treats at the Port St. Lucie Community Center. Northport K-8 students prepared and served treats for the 2019 Citizens Summit.

At Mariposa Elementary, Mrs. Bonilla’s students continue to work on sounding out words and identifying the individual letters of a Consonant Vowel Consonant (CVC) word. This week they discussed things they can build, and one of the items mentioned was being able to build words! Students were given alphabet blocks and instructed to build certain words by sounding out, after finding their CVC word, they wrote the following sentence “I can build words.” Next, they wrote their word and drew a picture. Students in picture are Iker Collao, Danella Sooknanan, and Rose Mault.
Each year St. Lucie Public Schools commends its Young Authors with a celebration. This year’s event will be at Oak Hammock School and the guest author will be Lois McGuire, author of Don’t Be That Kid At School! and her latest book, Don’t be that Kid at Home! St. Lucie Public Schools put together an energy advisory board, consisting of vendors, engineers, district staff, utility company personnel, architects, engineers, school board members and others, to address ways to reduce utility costs. Rather than just considering individual schools with immediate needs, the group outlined a long-term plan for the entire district, looking at systems that would need to be replaced in five, ten and fifteen years. They evaluated their replacement vs repair options, taking into account maintenance expenses and the age of the chillers, and analyzed life cycle costs of replacement chillers. The Treasure Coast Inter-Agency Transition Council gives the Navigation Award to five people from the four-county area. It is given to those we are leading the way by navigating transition services for supporting the successful transition of persons with disabilities from school to post-graduation. Penny Scialdo, School-Based ESE Specialist, has always been a proponent of seamless, positive transition for her students. We appreciate all she has done for the students in St. Lucie Public Schools. A big congratulations to Penny for her outstanding service!
Join Superintendent E. Wayne Gent and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for Town Hall Meetings scheduled at high schools around the district. The purpose of these meetings is to inform the public about the referendum scheduled for mail-in vote on April 3, 2019. Superintendent Gent will share a brief presentation and afterwards the floor will be open to the public for questions.
Fort Pierce Central High School art students and culinary students are working together to bring awareness to a community problem. For $15 anyone can purchase a bowl, fill it with fresh hot soup prepared by the school’s culinary arts students and when they are done eating, the bowl goes home with them as a symbol of all the empty bowls in the community. The bowls will be on sale at the Fort Pierce Farmers Market on Saturday, March 16th. All proceeds benefit the Treasure Coast Food Bank. What a stupendous morning at Northport K-8 celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss!
