Northport K-8 kindergartners dazzled parents,grandparents,administrators and guests as they read from a fluency showcase of reading skills. Students dressed for their parts such as the lion, the skateboarder, the cat, the frog, the dreamer and the bug and used a microphone to show off their reading fluency skills in a readers theater program. The school’s media center was filled with parents, grandparents and guests as the students blended different story lines to make one great student showcase of reading skills. Staff and faculty mentors at F.K. Sweet Elementary were recently treated to a luncheon compliments of PTO, and hosted by Robin Zabitosky and Barbara Whellams, Mentoring Committee chairs. Mentors give of their time before, after school, or during their lunch, to help students in the areas of reading, math, and writing. Students at Windmill Point Elementary performed the musical “Annie, Jr.” at Treasure Coast High School recently. All of the students who participated did a wonderful job, and we truly appreciated all the teachers, staff and parents who helped make this play such a huge success!!

Southport Middle School students gathered in the Media Center for one last celebration before the school year comes to an end. Northport K-8 PTO celebrated the students’ accomplishments for the school year by holding a Fun Run.  Over 100 runners, their families and teachers from Northport K-8 participated in a run, a bounce house, a rock climbing wall and a dinner together after school recently.  Students picked up their 2012 yearbooks and had their teachers sign at the party, then enjoyed some time with their friends during the Fun Run and Yearbook signing party.  It was a wonderfully unifying event and the PTO declared it a success!

The Port St. Lucie High School JROTC contains many hard-working cadets that go the extra mile on their road to success. One of the most notable cadets is cadet Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Jacobson. He recently earned the Good Citizenship Award, sponsored and presented by the Saint Lucie River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution organization. The earning of this award recognizes his outstanding demonstration of honor, service, courage, and everything within those characteristics. Students from Windmill Point Elementary’s second grade classes enjoyed a field trip to the South Florida Science Museum. Shannon Sivalls and her students visit the prehistoric section of the museum.

Windmill Point Elementary School hosted a Leadership Day and welcomed community members to learn about the school’s programs.  Fourth grade student Talia Ricketts shows visitors her data binder at a mock student led conference.

The recent Scholastic Book Fair at F.K. Sweet Elementary was a huge success. Every student received a free book and was able to shop throughout the week.  Parent Maria Mendoza, volunteered several days and is pictured helping Justin Adrian, left, and Caleb Cobb select books for their summer reading.

Students in Lesley Eagle’s fifth grade gifted classroom participated in the Stock Market Game and placed first in the Elementary Division! They were honored at a recent awards ceremony. Pictured, from left, are  Carson McCann, Matthew Ongel, Ms. Eagle, and Jack Siruchek.    

Morningside Elementary School’s second grade teacher Sarah Roddin is reading, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud to her class. This book is a guide to daily happiness for kids. Her students enjoy beginning their day in a positive way.

Fifth grade students at Morningside Elementary in Brad Culbertson and Mary Mascello’s classrooms put on an outstanding production of “Robin Hood” for their parents and students. Students not only performed but also created all of the costumes and sets for the production.

Northport K-8 students were celebrated for Excellence in Education in math recently at a Mathlete Award ceremony.  Students were given certificates and special recognition at the program which celebrated their dedication and hard work this school year in math.  The third through fifth grade students won first place at the Northport K-8 Math Bowl competition and went on to represent Northport at the district first annual Math Bowl competition held at Fort Pierce Central High School.  The middle school students represented Northport at the regional MathCounts competition at Indian River State College in February.  Students are to be congratulated for … Read More

Middle grades Northport K-8 students in the culinary arts program, under the direction of Caren Boyd,  participated in a cupcake war recently.  Students worked in cooperative teams and devised plans and recipes to produce the best cupcake.  Students in six groups used   Oreos, confetti, gum drops, Hershey kisses, marshmallows, caramel, cherries, peaches, strawberries and different types of icing to concoct the best cupcake.  Judges used a rubric which included taste, appearance, moistness and ingenuity.  Pictured are the winners, from left, Nailen Hernandez, Jaquinton Price, Joel Diaz and Kara Turpin.  The winning cupcake was Oreo flavored with a fudge center, vanilla … Read More

Northport K-8 physical education instructors Linda Walker, Kim Kanada Graff, Ryan Carpenter, Kevin Fess, James Hebb and Daryn Ploeckelman promoted the joy of vigorous activity as well as building teamwork, cooperative learning skills and fine tuning locomotor activity.  Students in grades kindergarten through fifth were treated to Field Days Northport style!  A variety of activities were offered including parachute ball, obstacle courses, hula hoops, basketball throws, bouncy ball races, sidewalk chalk races, jump ropes, bubble blowing contests and lots more great events.  The classroom teachers are to be thanked for their participation right along with their students and many parents … Read More

Teamwork and physical fitness are two of the fundamentals of JROTC training. A year’s worth of training is put the test annually at Field Day hosted by the Jaguar Battalion at Port St. Lucie High School. During Field Day, the three companies battled each other in several different sports and athletic activities to determine the best unit.  Battalion Field day is about saying goodbye to departing seniors. The Booster Club’s parting gift to the year’s seniors was a challenge coin commemorating their years spent with the Jaguar Battalion. In order to teach the students how to write in a variety of informational forms related to real world situations, the fourth grade students at Floresta Elementary created “How-to” manuals and recipe books. The recipe books included student made recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. As a culminating project, several classes used the recipes to make different items including French toast, pizza, and vanilla Oreo parfaits!
