Students in three Allied Health Assisting classes at St. Lucie West Centennial High School recently completed a Financial Literacy Program in Mary Higgins’ and Elizabeth Durkee’s classes. The program consisted of 12 online modules and was completed as a class assignment. The program is offered through the nonprofit Debt Management Credit Counseling by Jason Athas, Manager of Educational Programs at Debt Management Credit Corps. The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion Orienteering Team recently ventured to Woodpecker West, a part of Ocala National Forest, to test their navigation skills against other Orienteering teams from across the state of Florida. This competition was the first real challenge for the Orienteering Team this year. Every month Bayshore Elementary media center holds a research contest.  Congratulations to Angela Castellon from Christine Mueller’s fifth grade class who won the most recent Media Center Contest by researching to find the names of books written by Martin Luther King Jr.

Kindergarten students at Fairlawn Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of school by spending 100 minutes outside. Students completed centers which included finding 100 pennies, jumping rope 100 times, and writing their numbers to 100 by 10s with sidewalk chalk.

Bayshore Elementary School’s second graders presented a PTO performance honoring current and past United States presidents. Students researched about the presidents and shared what they learned through writings, songs and skits.  Pictured is Aidyn Davenport (center) portraying President George Washington, along with Ashleigh Maypole (left) and Katelynn Penny-Hall (right), all from Kay De Aguiar’s class.

Students from Nardi Routten’s fourth grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementary recently enjoyed an unique  learning experience at Blind Creek Park. Students rotated through four different activities: seining, beach clean-up, water testing, and mangrove planting/measuring.  Jennifer Fleschner, a  parent volunteer helped Jason Moore and Annamarie Brosnihan test the river water for oxygen levels.  The students concluded that the deeper the water level, the higher the oxygen levels.

Aamar Black, Sarah Bartowiak, Annika Huhtamaki, Greyson Cripps, and other first graders at F.K. Sweet Elementary celebrated the 100th day of school by doing math activities with 100 items.  Students practiced different ways to make 100, different ways to skip count to 100, and came up with 100 words that they learned this year.  

Bobby Kemp, a senior at Lincoln Park Academy, was recently chosen as Youth Volunteer at F.K. Sweet Elementary. He has volunteered in Marla Liberatore’s third grade classroom for the last couple of years. Bobby enjoys spending time with the students and does a little bit of everything, from assisting with math and reading, to teaching them the rules of fair play and basketball.

Recently third grade students in Barbara Whellams’ class at F.K. Sweet Elementary celebrated with a how-to event. Students were given a how-to book of their choice to read. Upon completion, students were asked to write down the directions sequentially and in their own words. Kayla Jungjohan, Julian Nunez, and Ajeya Adams take a break to enjoy punch and snacks before getting back to work.

Junior volunteers and former F. K. Sweet Elementary students Callie Zheng and Amelia Nelson are ace librarians when it comes to working in Barbara Whellams’ classroom library after school. They check book tubs to make sure books are returned correctly, sort out duplicates, and then lexile each book. With well over 5,000 books, lots of assistance is needed and appreciated.

Sweet  Elementary, display the vocabulary posters they created.  The posters illustrated the meanings of various vocabulary words from their unit on solids, liquids, and gases.

Students in Kasey Ascani’s second grade class at F. K. Sweet Elementary are using their knowledge gained from a field trip to the Fort Pierce Historical Museum to construct dioramas for the St. Lucie County Fair’s school exhibit. During the trip, students learned about life in St. Lucie County during the 1800’s. James Ewing, Samia Ahmed, and Luis Herrera are working together in creating Fort Pierce’s P.B. Cobb general store.

Floresta Elementary School’s Family Learning Night was held recently. Dignity Memorial Escape School, a nationally recognized child abduction prevention program, was presented by George Seliga from Aycock Funeral Home.  The program is designed to empower children by teaching escape strategies in a fun, non-threatening manner.  Over 50 parents and students attended to learn how to escape in an abduction attempt.  Mr. Seliga simulated abduction situations and gave members of the audience opportunities to practice.  Parents appreciated the informational program dedicated to child safety.

Black History recognition sparkled at Northport K-8 School recently. Principal Glenn Rustay gave opening remarks to students and faculty with a short story prepared by student Rubenson Charles called “If There Were No Black People.”  The Northport K-8 band conducted by Derrick Williams played “Mercy,Mercy, Mercy”.  The Northport choir ensemble directed by Shirley Lyons performed as well as a modern praise dance routine by Monique Robinson.  The highlight of the Black History presentation was an inspiring narrative given by former Northport K-8 principal Eric Seymour.  Mr. Seymour told students that he was a member in good standing at Northport forever … Read More

Kari McIntyre’s kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary School learned about the characteristics of penguins. The students wrote about what they eat, where they live, and what they look like. The students’ final project was creating their own penguins. Northport physical education instructors Linda Walker, Kim Kanada Graff, Daryn Ploeckelman, James Hebb, Kevin Fess and Ryan Carpenter promoted camaraderie and collegial interactions as they modeled for students not only the joy of jumping rope but promoting jumping rope for an excellent cause. Students and PE teachers raised well over $3000 for Jump Rope For Heart this year!  Students were thrilled as the music blasted as each participated in jumping single, double and double dutch ropes.  The display of unity by the coaches promoted a positive atmosphere for the students and much was accomplished.

Dr. Laura Woodworth, Northport K-8 science instructor, tweaked seventh grade student Grace Buzziz’s interest and provoked an in depth home learning project as Grace surprised Dr. Woodworth with an active and scientifically correct volcano. Grace modeled her volcano with running lava and answered detailed questions from classmates about her scientific inquiry. Grace urged her classmates to start independent scientific projects at home to extend their classroom learning.

The VPK class at Garden City Early Learning Academy recentlycelebrated 100 days of school!   The students have accomplished so much during the first 100 days.   To celebrate, they participated in various activities such as counting to 100 and reading stories and poems.  The class also made a Toy Store containing 100 toys.    The students made “100th day” party hats to wear for the celebration.   During snack time, pretzels and crackers were used to make the number 100 which the students ate,  along with apples from the fresh fruit and vegetable program.

This week in music class at Allapattah Flats K-8, students listened to a piece called “Gallop” from The Comedians composed by Dimitri Kabalevsky. The instructional focus was on “form,” the structure of a musical composition as it can be divided into different sections. Teacher Danya Etter made the activity exciting by not only adding movements for the different sections of the piece, but also had streamers to make the lesson a hit!
