Dr. Jacqueline Venzen and Dr. Thomas Gay, fifth-grade science teachers at Village Green Environmental Studies School, engaged their classes in conducting hands-on scientific investigations regarding paper airplane flight. Students had to identify a problem, develop a hypothesis, plan and carry out systematic observations, outline a plan of action, and test their airplane design as they recorded their results. Students were actively engaged in demonstrating their understanding of the scientific process as they let their paper airplanes take flight in an outdoor setting. Students also conducted additional research regarding airplane design and which designs were best suited for long-distance airplane flight.
