Natalia Chekhovskaya of Indian River State College’s LASER-TEC, Photonics, and Optics lab, visited Treasure Coast High School’s Engineering Club to talk about girls in engineering, and in return, she heard about the Club’s solar GoKart project. This partnership is a great collaboration working on classroom projects and Club activities.
St. Lucie Public Schools Career and Technical Education teachers in the Technical Design, Applied Robotics, Global Logistics Supply Chain, Aerospace, and Engineering programs virtually met with business partners, Tim Fischer from South East Elevator, Paul Jakubczak from Fort Pierce Utilities Authority, Paul Godfrey from Indian River State College, Muhammed Anwar from East Coast Truss, Maria Brown and Jason Smith from A1 Truss, and Natalia Chekhovskaya from Indian River State College. The group shared experiences, exchanged ideas and will continue to build on this collaboration at their next meeting in December. Big thanks to all who attended!
Port St. Lucie High Culinary Program virtually visited the Sunshine Kitchen in Fort Pierce. Chef Roland Foerster and his culinary students virtually visited the Sunshine Kitchen hosted by Gina McCants, Sunshine Kitchen Manager and Tcerda Research Park Manager. The students learned about activities at the Sunshine Kitchen and watched a food demonstration by Chef Leslie Moyers and his team.
The Economic Development Council (EDC) hosted a live virtual tour for counselors, educators, school and district administration. The focus for the session was on the warehouse, distribution, and logistics industry. Participants gained knowledge from local industry leaders from FedEx Ground Regional Sortation Center, Southern Eagle Distributing, and Walmart Distribution Center. This tied directly to the newest Career and Technical Education program, Global Logistics and Supply Chain Technology. St. Lucie Public School’s Career and Technical Education department is proud to have collaborated with the Economic Development Council (EDC) for this event!
Treasure Coast High’s (TCHS) Advanced Manufacturing pre-apprenticeship program virtually visited to hear important highlights of the Industrial Manufacturing Technology Apprenticeship. On Microsoft Teams, TCHS Instructor Phil Depuy and his Advanced Manufacturing students stayed in their classroom to listen and ask questions of Dawn Riccardi at CareerSource Research Coast, Jim Brann, and Bobby at The Porch Factory in Fort Pierce. Big thanks to Treasure Coast Manufacturer Association (TCMA) who were instrumental in coordinating these presentations!
Allied Health educators from Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet and Port St. Lucie High School attended a professional development session surrounding the newest manikin technology purchased for their campus. To meet the needs of students training at the next level, our Career and Technical Education students are going to use these manikins to have simulated learning directly in their classrooms. These manikins are able to simulate advanced training for vital signs, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), automated defibrillator (AED), to an Electrocardiogram (EKG). Students from Mrs. Julie-Anne JnPaul’s Pharmacy Technician program at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy: The WEST Prep Magnet, attended a virtual session with Indian River State College (IRSC). Dr. Jessica Fulton from IRSC spoke with the graduating seniors regarding opportunities for them to continue on their academic-career path as Pharmacy Technicians. This session included a presentation, question and answer segment, and students were able to leave the session with knowledge and plans for their future!
The Industrial Biotechnology program (Mr. John Williams’ students) at Treasure Coast High School (TCHS) collaborated with Keiser University’s Biotechnology department. This virtual lab session was led by Dr. Weir of Keiser University to provide a simulated lab experience for the TCHS students preparing for their Biotechnician Assistant industry certification exam.
Port St. Lucie High School’s Technical Design Program and Preapprenticeship students hosted 3D Printed Car Races. Students designed, tested, 3D printed, and raced their cars in the gym! Mr. Picchiarini and his Tech Design students not only entertained but recruited students into the Technical Design classes. Level Up CTE!
Port St Lucie High’s Culinary Program students and Chef Foerster took lunch to Paris! Students in the Jazzy Jags Café prepped, cooked, and served delicious lunches Parisienne Style; Croque Monsieur with baked ham, Gruyere cheese and dijon on brioche slices browned until the cheese melted served with Salad Orientale, and Pommes Frites (French Fries!). Port St. Lucie High’s Building Construction Technologies students hosted a virtual field trip for Mr. Kevin Fess’s students at Northport K-8. The high school students highlighted the skills learned and equipment used in their program. The 8th graders asked great questions while sitting in their middle school classroom! Treasure Coast High’s JROTC US Airforce and Criminal Justice programs hosted the Port St Lucie Police Department’s drone team! Port St. Lucie Police Officers discussed drone usage in Port St Lucie and demonstrated drone skills for students, Mr. Diego Rios, Mr. Roger Allcroft, Chief Jeffrey Barnes, and Colonel James Golden.
The 2021 Ready to Work Boot Camp Informational session hosted by Jill Marasa with the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie and St. Lucie Public School’s Career and Technical Education department was a virtual event. This session included interested graduating high school seniors within St. Lucie Public Schools desiring employment immediately upon graduation in manufacturing and engineering industry sectors.
Mary Murphy from CareerSource Research Coast in conjunction with Career & Technical Education department hosted a career exploration session for medical academy seniors. This session was to follow-up to the EDC’s Virtual Healthcare Tour for guidance counselors and teachers that occurred in Fall 2020. Participating students learned about available resources and employment opportunities within our county and on the Treasure Coast.
Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital (Brenda Byk and Stacey Rhodewalt) in collaboration with SLPS’ Career & Technical Education (CTE) Department hosted a virtual employment informational session for our medical students. This session provided entry-level employment information for our graduating seniors and steps to turn their career and educational goals into reality!
Brittany Shoun, Fort Pierce Westwood Veterinary Assisting Instructor is very proud to announce that the FFA Vet Assisting Team placed THIRD in the State on the FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Event! The Team won first place in the pre-lim to secure a spot at the State contest and will be recognized at the State Convention for their 3rd in State WIN! St. Lucie Public Schools has five pre-apprenticeship programs preparing students for careers. The pre-apprenticeship Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school programs are located across the District: Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering at Treasure Coast High Building Construction Technologies at Port St Lucie High Outboard Marine Service Technology at St Lucie West Centennial High Pharmacy Technician at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy – The W.E.S.T. Prep Magnet Technical Design at Port St Lucie High The pre-apprenticeships offered in CTE at St. Lucie Public Schools lead into registered apprenticeship trades of Carpenter, Industrial Manufacturing Technician, Truss Design Technician, Pharmacy Technician, and Yacht Service Technician.
CTE Medical teachers and students from St. Lucie Public Schools participated in a virtual forum with Dr. Thomas Matese, Dr. Josephin Mathai, Dr. Ashkahn Zomorrodi, Dr. Nguyen, and Dr. McNamara from St. Lucie Medical Center. Over 200 SLPS Medical students learned about the process to become a Physician from the St. Lucie Medical Center’s Emergency Medicine Residency DEI group. This presentation also included Resident students currently in the Emergency Medicine program sharing their personal experiences and pathway to achieve their medical career goals.
