In our classroom, learning isn’t something that just happens—it’s an adventure our students take the wheel on. We believe they grow best when they’re in the driver’s seat, and our recent student‑led conferences were the perfect moment to let that leadership shine. As Dr. Seuss reminds us in Oh, the Places You’ll Go! “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” Our students did exactly that.
To showcase their reading accomplishments, St. Lucie West K-8 students in Mrs. Zalepeski’s third-grade ELA classes created vibrant digital portfolios using Canva. This project challenged them to gather meaningful evidence of their learning, explain their progress, and set specific, actionable goals for the rest of the year. By personalizing their presentations, students didn’t just share what they’ve learned—they told their own learning stories with confidence and creativity.
The final presentations were nothing short of inspiring. Students proudly shared their achievements with families, peers, and staff, demonstrating not only their literacy growth but also their developing strengths in digital communication and self‑advocacy. Watching them step forward with such pride and ownership felt like seeing the beginning of their own “great places”—a true celebration of the journeys ahead.
