St. Lucie West Centennial NJROTC Hosts First Drill Meet of the 2026–2027 School Year

On October 10, 2026, the St. Lucie West Centennial High School NJROTC Black Talon Company proudly hosted its first Drill Meet of the 2026–2027 school year. The event brought together 10 NJROTC programs from across Florida for a full day of military drill, physical fitness, academic competition, teamwork, and camaraderie. The competition provided cadets with an opportunity to demonstrate their military bearing, discipline, leadership, teamwork, and esprit de corps while representing their respective schools.

Participating schools included:

  • Boca High School
  • Lake Mary High School
  • Nova High School
  • Cooper City High School
  • Cypress Creek High School
  • Bayside High School
  • Sebastian River High School
  • Tohopekaliga High School
  • Braddock High School
  • Royal Palm Beach High School

The day began at 0600 with a company muster, followed by final preparations and the execution of assigned responsibilities throughout the campus. Black Talon cadets played a critical role in the planning, coordination, and execution of the competition. Cadets were assigned responsibilities that included school liaisons, score sheet runners, event observers, parking operations, concessions, first aid support, and Command Center operations.

Throughout the competition, visiting units participated in Armed Basic Drill, Unarmed Basic Drill, Armed Exhibition Drill, Unarmed Exhibition Drill, Color Guard, Personnel Inspection, Academics, and Physical Fitness events. Each event challenged cadets to demonstrate precision, military bearing, attention to detail, teamwork, physical endurance, and the ability to perform under pressure. Collectively, these events reinforced the importance of discipline, unit cohesion, and esprit de corps, which remain fundamental principles of the NJROTC program.

A crucial component of the competition’s success was the support provided by military judges representing various active-duty and reserve components of the United States Armed Forces. These service members volunteered their time and professional expertise to evaluate cadet performances, uphold competition standards, and ensure fair and consistent scoring. Their participation was instrumental in the successful execution of the event and provided cadets with an opportunity to interact with military professionals who embody the values of service, leadership, and commitment. The Black Talon Company extends its sincere appreciation to these military personnel for their dedication and willingness to support the development of our nation’s future leaders.

Behind the scenes, Black Talon cadets demonstrated their ability to execute a large-scale event through effective planning, communication, and teamwork. School liaisons assisted visiting units with navigation, scheduling, and coordination, while runners and observers ensured score sheets were delivered promptly and competition areas remained on schedule. Cadets assigned to the Command Center, parking operations, and other logistical responsibilities contributed to maintaining an organized and professional environment throughout the day.

For the cadets of St. Lucie West Centennial High School, hosting this competition was much more than supporting a drill meet. It served as a practical leadership development opportunity that challenged cadets to apply event planning, organizational management, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills in a real-world environment. By assuming ownership of their assigned responsibilities, cadets gained valuable experience in accountability, initiative, and working collectively toward a common mission. These experiences contribute directly to strengthening the leadership culture, operational effectiveness, and overall learning environment of the Black Talon NJROTC program.

At 1400, the competition continued with the 100-meter Relay Race, followed by the Color Guard changeover at 1430. The Black Talon Color Guard for the awards ceremony consisted of C/LT Simpson, C/SCPO Nestler, C/CPO Ross, and C/LTCM Ramirez, who represented the company with professionalism and pride during the conclusion of the event.

The Awards Ceremony commenced at 1500, recognizing the dedication, preparation, and outstanding performances of the participating NJROTC units. Lake Mary High School NJROTC earned First Place Overall, demonstrating exceptional performance across the competition events. Trophies and awards were presented to recognize the achievements of participating schools and individual teams.

A special recognition goes to the Black Talon NJROTC parent volunteers, who took the lead in organizing, preparing, and serving lunch to the 10 participating schools. Their dedication, generosity, and willingness to support the event were essential to its success. Their efforts ensured visiting cadets, instructors, and supporting personnel were provided meals throughout the competition. The Black Talon Company is extremely grateful for the continued involvement of our parents, whose contributions strengthen our program and demonstrate the importance of community support in developing our cadets.

Following the awards ceremony, Black Talon cadets remained on campus to conduct cleanup operations, restore competition areas, and return the school facilities to their normal condition. This final responsibility reinforced the importance of accountability, teamwork, and completing the mission from beginning to end.

Hosting a drill meet of this magnitude required extensive coordination among cadets, instructors, military judges, parent volunteers, and school personnel. The event demonstrated what can be accomplished when individuals work together with a shared purpose and commitment to excellence.

The Black Talon Company extends its sincere appreciation to all participating NJROTC units, active-duty and reserve military judges, instructors, parent volunteers, school administrators, staff members, and cadets who contributed to the success of this event. Their collective efforts made the first Black Talon Drill Meet of the 2026–2027 school year a meaningful experience for everyone involved.

More importantly, the competition reinforced the mission of NJROTC: developing informed, responsible, and disciplined citizens through leadership, character development, teamwork, and service to others.
