St. Lucie Public Schools boasts a thirty percent increase in the number of schools recognized with Model School status for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS). The University of South Florida (USF), manager of the PBIS Project for the State of Florida, provided District personnel with notification of this prestigious distinction.
PBIS is a school-wide behavioral approach that focuses on increasing academic performance and increasing safety while decreasing problem behaviors with specific and consistent strategies. A focus on individual needs using data along with positive and effective strategies are also key elements to a successful PBIS school-wide plan.
Seventeen of the District’s 38 traditional schools received this accolade. According to Executive Director of Student Services Bill Tomlinson, “Having so many of our schools identified as Model Schools is a wonderful honor for our District and a true representation of the work that all of our schools do each and every day to promote the PBIS infrastructure.”
“Achievement of PBIS Model School is the result of collaborative efforts between Student Services personnel and site-based personnel working tirelessly to provide for the needs of students and to build the Multi-Tiered System of Supports in the schools. Together, educational professionals work to address appropriate behavior and celebrate students’ goal attainment,” explained SLPS’s PBIS Coordinator Robert O’Neill who also serves as the liaison between the District and USF.
