Students in Mrs. Whitehead’s second-grade classroom at Rivers Edge Elementary received a special visit from Deputy Wheeler as part of a creative effort to encourage reading fluency and celebrate student achievement.
During the visit, Deputy Wheeler listened as students read their UFLI decodable books, recognizing those who demonstrated strong fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. Rather than monitoring traffic, she was on the lookout for speedy readers who showcased strong literacy skills and reading confidence.
Students who demonstrated outstanding reading performance were awarded special “speeding tickets,” creating a fun and memorable way to celebrate their progress. The unique incentive reinforced the importance of reading with both speed and understanding while motivating students to continue building fluency, confidence, and a love of reading. Through engaging experiences like this, Rivers Edge Elementary continues to make literacy learning both meaningful and exciting.
