 Northport K-8 students in Georgia Stone’s sixth grade class enjoy a unique PBS or Positive Behavior Support activity.  Students are using critical thinking skills, following directions and team building techniques to produce an authentic product.  After viewing Mrs. Stone modeling crocheting techniques, reading exact directions and getting the yarn and hooks together and understanding the tools, students are refining techniques to make their own scarves.  Students will give the scarves as gifts or enjoy for themselves.  Students did an excellent job decoding instructions, monitoring each others progress and cultivating a positive classroom community that is celebrated with enthusiasm.

The student council of St. Lucie Elementary recently held a food drive to benefit the Harvest Food and Outreach Center.  Jakob Warren, Ramon Aguilar and Yasmin Enriquez from Holly Stephen’s first grade class proudly display canned goods their class collected.

Northport K-8 seventh grade students in De Green’s science classes are studying the electromagnetic spectrum. As microwave ovens are a form of radio waves within this spectrum, the student research teams developed individual tests that could be performed with popcorn kernals. Tests varied widely but examples are, “does kernal location in the microwave affact popping success?” and “If a kernal is not in a wrapper, will it pop in the microwave?” When the data was analyzed and conclusions reached by each research team, success was celebrated by popping a bag of popcorn for student consumption. Northport K-8 second graders welcomed Hobe Sound Nature Preserve into classrooms to learn about different types of owls and their eating habits.  The program Directors, Ms. Debbie and Mr. Traci, brought two live owls and owl pellets to the classrooms for students to inspect and dissect.  Students became expert researchers as they picked, poked and prodded their way through the pellets.  Students found mouse and rat skulls, bones, ribs, hair, jaw bones, teeth and hip bones inside the pellets.  Students completed their scientific research by making sorting charts and aligning the specific bone to a diagram.  This reseach offers second … Read More

Northport K-8 School is proud to announce the school based Volunteer of the Year, Rosemary Lambert and the Senior Volunteer of the Year, Bill Arnold.  Mrs. Lambert has dedicated her services to the school on a daily basis for the last three years.  She is on campus each day volunteering in the choral and band departments, sewing and cooking in the culinary department and generally assisting wherever she is needed.  Mr. Arnold has been a fixture at the school for the last four years.  He has been an integral asset in bringing the school’s Veteran Partners In Education  program to fruition.  Through … Read More

The National Junior Honor Society at Southport Middle School is helping the PTO assemble food baskets for the holidays for some Southport families.   Pictured, from left, are Sarah Welker, Kaylee Tolliver, Lucia Cabanela   This is another way that students are learning to care for the needs of the community and make a positive impact when ever possible.

Southport Middle School art teacher Judith Hough and her students, along with the cafeteria manager and staff ran an art contest for My.Plate. The students were able to choose from each food group and create a drawing using food as the base for the picture.  Students were awarded School Lunch “Let’s Grow Healthy” pencils for participating.  First place student Shaqwan Brown won a $25.00 gift card to Walmart.  Second place students received a jump rope and My Walking Fitness Guide and Recorder for Kids.

Southport Middle School students were the first to spend Cane Cash to have lunch together at the new PBS hot spot on campus. Principal Lydia Martin and Assistant Principal Nicole Telese stopped by to see students enjoying cool conversation in the relaxing atmosphere, dining in comfort with their friends at the new PBS Canes VIP Luncheon located in the SPMS cafeteria. Southport Middle School’s Bobcats recently participated in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program by sending a touch of home to the U.S. military. Northport K-8 students in Karen Nystrom’s seventh grade civics classes are tackling some tough issues this year as students delve into the affairs of community government.  Students use Media Center resources, classroom text and guest speaker information to look at issues from all sides to process new information and to be able to elaborate on important issues.  Important guest speakers who will impart vital information  this month are School Board member Troy Ingersoll who will discuss student homelessness in St. Lucie County and SLC School Safety Specialist Robert Berk who will discuss student behavior on busses and safety.

Southport’s PTO Vice President, Ruth Altvater and PTO Treasurer, Colleen Korpon pictured here are helping organize and wrap holiday baskets of food.  There were 10 baskets made available to our Southport Middle families for the holidays.  All the food was available through the PTO Food Bank and was courtesy of community donations and students and families of Southport.

All Forest Grove Middle School students competed in the second annual Forest  Grove Metric Olympics. Students traveled through a series of eight stations that aimed to give them hands-on experience in estimating and measuring mass, volume, distance and time using the Metric System. This activity allowed students to manipulate math and science in a fun, competitive setting.
