The community is invited to enjoy a showcase of hundreds of science projects created by some of our district’s youngest budding scientists in kindergarten through fifth grade at the 2012 St. Lucie Public Schools Science Showcase on Saturday, May 19 from 10 AM to 3 PM at Southern Oaks Middle School, located at 5500 N. Northport student writers set examples for excellence

Third graders’ favorite book features unsavory character

“Fly Guy” is a favorite read of third grade students at F.K. Sweet Elementary. Fly Guy is a character created by Tedd Arnold, author of more than 50 children’s books. Fly Guy can be found hanging out in garbage cans and eating his favorite foods, anything brown, oozy and smelly. Floresta Elementary teacher selected for group study tour of Germany

Congratulations to Floresta Elementary School fourth grade teacher Veronica Allende, who was selected by the Transatlantic Outreach Program to participate in a two week group travel study tour of Germany. The group will travel on various dates this summer from late June through August. Study will focus on the German governmental system, federal system, school system, history of Germany including the Holocaust, and German business and economy, culture, current events, and the German approach to issues regarding earth stewardship. F. K. Sweet students learn benefits of Florida citrus

Captain Citrus visited F.K. Sweet Elementary to inform second graders about the importance of the citrus industry and the healthful benefits of Florida’s orange juice and other citrus products. Students Mya Baptiste, pictured right, and Trevor Gill  won gift cards for correctly answering questions asked by Captain Citrus.

F. K. Sweet Elementary students learn about beneficial bugs

Kindergarten and second grade students at F.K.Sweet Elementary School were excited to be a part of a ladybug release program conducted by the University of Florida’s agriculture department. Preston Zinter, left, and William Geraghty from Traci Lott’s second grade class are just getting ready to release hundreds of ladybugs onto neighboring plants. Students were able to learn about good and bad bugs for our environment and learned ways that ladybugs actually help the plants around us.    

F. K. Sweet students celebrate reading by making pancakes

After reading “Curious George Makes Pancakes” by Margret and H.A. Rey, students in Morgan Haupt’s kindergarten class at F.K. Sweet Elementary School made pancakes for themselves. The students loved learning and seeing first-hand how pancakes are made. Gaines Academy students smell the flowers

Port St. Lucie High cadets compete for honors

The Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion recently held its fourth Outstanding Cadet Board of the year. The board is a competition between cadets in which they answer many questions on various subjects ranging from the JROTC curriculum and uniform wear to drill and ceremonies. The top cadets from each company are selected compete with two winners overall — one winner from the junior cadets and one from the senior cadets. Three Fort Pierce Central student athletes sign scholarships

Three student athletes at Fort Pierce Central High School have signed letters of intent to attend colleges and participate in athletics. Ron Clarke, right, who earned a varsity letter for four years as a Cobra, will play football at Florida Institute of Technology. Gabby Lopez, center, who earned a varsity letter three years at Central, will play softball at Western Oklahoma State College. Marcus Sigmon, left, lettered in baseball four years at Central and will play  baseball Indian River State College.  

St. Lucie Elementary students recognize Earth Day

Palm Pointe first graders explore St. Lucie lagoon with the Manatee Center

Students in Desiree Miller’s first grade class at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition explored the St. Lucie lagoon with the Manatee Center.  The students captured many different fish and other sea animals in the estuary using nets.  After collecting the different things they found, the students sorted them before releasing them back into the river.  It was a great learning experience and a fun day for all!  Pictured are students, from left, Sabrina Fontanez, Jasmine Chuong, Kiera Murray and a staff member from the Manatee Center helping them.

Northport K8 School welcomes living voices holocaust presentation

Northport K-8 School was pleased to present the Holocaust program Living Voices recently to all sixth graders at the school.  The Living Voices program is an interactive program that incorporates Holocaust history, the story of the Frank family and video and audio presentation to engage  students in realistic history about the Diary of Anne Frank.  The story enhancement of the program was told from the point of view of a young girl living through the Holocaust who was friends with the Franks.  The program supports Holocaust education in our school and deepens and enriches student information about the Holocaust.  Pictured … Read More

Reading buddies create learning partnerships

Allapattah K8 fifth graders visit planetarium

Fifth grade students from Allapattah Flats K-8 learn about the solar system while visiting Indian River State College’s planetarium.
