Centennial’s Early Childhood Classes Experience Wearing an “Empathy Belly”

The staff from the Children’s Home Society “Teen Life Choices” visited Mrs. Wester’s early childhood classes and had the students try on an “Empathy Belly”, which allows the students to feel like they are 9 months pregnant. The students walked around the classroom, tried to tie their shoes, tried lying down and getting up, and bending down to pick up toys on the floor. Centennial Valedictorian Accepted Into Four Ivy League Universities

Satchel Joseph, the 2016 SLWCHS valedictorian, has been accepted into four Ivy League Universities: Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton, and The University of Pennsylvania. She was also accepted by Georgia Tech and Duke. All of the institutions offered her substantial scholarships ranging to more than $70,000 per year. Centennial Teacher/Golf Coach Gets a Shout Out at The Masters

Some call it the Superbowl of golf, but it’s more like the Daytona 500 in that it is the first of the four majors each season. It is The Masters, and unlike most tournaments, it is an invitational and always played at Augusta National. Therefore, the field is smaller and loaded with recent tournament winners. Centennial Students Learn Civil Discourse with Legal Experts

Centennial Criminal Justice students recently had the unique opportunity to participate in a Civil Discourse session led by Judge Maynard, alongside several local attorneys and legal staff who volunteered their time. This hands-on experience aimed to enhance students’ understanding of legal processes and effective communication. The session began with an attorney-led discussion on how to approach controversial matters, highlighting effective and ineffective behaviors during arguments. Centennial Student One Step Closer to Olympic Medal

Kailey McKnight tried out for Team USA Volleyball. Tryouts were held in 32 cities across the United States, and this Centennial Eagle was one of fifty-five girls selected to move to the next level of competition. Kailey will compete with the best this summer as part of USA Volleyball HP (High Performance) A1 National Select Training Team. We are very excited and proud of Kailey. Congratulations Kailey!

Senior Karina Sotolongo anxiously awaits the opening of the IRSC Writing Contest Awards ceremony. The contest has competitors from more than twenty area high schools, and there are three places for each of the four high school grades. Karina won third place as a sophomore, first as a junior, and first as a senior. As a three time winner, she received a plaque and a full scholarship to IRSC.

Centennial Senior Accepted by Cornell

Prince Edouard, Vice-President of the National Honor Society at SLWCHS, has been accepted by Cornell University in New York. Cornell, a prestigious Ivy League university, has an excellent program in chemistry and chemical biology, which Prince has chosen for his major. He plans to attend both medical and graduate school ultimately leading to a position as a research scientist with a pharmaceutical company.

Centennial Peer Navigators Coach Freshman Seminar Classes

During a freshman seminar class, the Student Peer Navigators led an engaging activity using the “Rock, Pebbles, and Sand” metaphor to help new students understand the importance of prioritizing their time and responsibilities. In this activity, the “rocks” represented the most important commitments—like family, health, and academics. The “pebbles” stood for secondary priorities such as extracurriculars or part-time jobs, while the “sand” symbolized the small, everyday distractions. Centennial National Honor Society Members Visit the Elliott Museum

St. Lucie West Centennial’s National Honor Society members visited the Elliott Museum in Stuart.  Through a guided tour, the students were exposed to the museum’s collections and exhibits.  The students learned about history, science and technology.  It was a fun, educational and entertaining experience for all.

Centennial Marine Program Meets with Advisory Board

St. Lucie West Centennial High School’s Outboard Marine Service Program teacher met with his Advisory Board. Local marine industry members virtually met with Mr. Bob Kachanis to collaborate on classroom projects and industry needs. More meetings and activities are planned. Centennial junior publishes novel

St. Lucie West Centennial High School junior Lauren King has published her first novel entitled  A Flower Named Rose. It is a teen romance in which the protagonist, a princess, flees to escape an arranged marriage. Her hope is that on her journey she will find happiness. The publisher is createspace.com, and the book may be ordered from Amazon.com.

Centennial Honors Retiring Athletic Director

St. Lucie West Centennial High School’s Baseball Program honored outgoing Athletic Director John Messina prior to their last scheduled regular season contest against Port St. Lucie High School. The longtime AD/coach threw out the first pitch to his former catcher, Johnnie Rhoden, who is now the Head Coach at PSLHS. Messina’s resume as a head coach includes over 400 victories, State Championships, multiple Major League players and countless collegiate scholarships at Monsignor Pace in Miami, Port St. Lucie High School, and Jensen Beach High School. Centennial High volleyballer chosen for state advisory committee

St. Lucie West Centennial High School senior Nicole McHenry is one of only 16 student athletes chosen  from over 700 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) member schools to serve on the FHSAA Student Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee is to educate student athletes on FHSAA policies. Nicole was nominated by SLWCHS Athletic Director John Messina and has played volleyball and softball for all of her four years at Centennial.

Centennial High students raise money for unique cause

Students at St. Lucie West Centennial High School recently held the second annual “Sleep in a Box” overnight fundraiser for Invisible Children, a program designed to help combat the abduction of children from Uganda and Sudan who are then forced to become assassins. Eighty five students participated this year, all sleeping outside in the courtyard, in their boxes. They raised over $800 for the organization to help update radio communications in the area and build schools for displaced children. Pictued are Leedy Boyle, left, and Dustin Snyder.
