Centennial Students Learn Civil Discourse with Legal Experts

Centennial Criminal Justice students recently had the unique opportunity to participate in a Civil Discourse session led by Judge Maynard, alongside several local attorneys and legal staff who volunteered their time. This hands-on experience aimed to enhance students’ understanding of legal processes and effective communication.

The session began with an attorney-led discussion on how to approach controversial matters, highlighting effective and ineffective behaviors during arguments. Students were then divided into three groups—Petitioners, Respondents, and the Jury—and given a fact pattern based on a real case. Attorney coaches worked privately with the Petitioners and Respondents to prepare their arguments, while another attorney guided the jury on their role and the applicable law.

In the courtroom, student attorneys presented their cases before Judge Maynard, followed by observing the jury’s deliberation process. The session concluded with Judge Maynard leading a reflective discussion on the activity and her role in the judicial process.

This experience provided the criminal justice students with valuable insights into civil discourse and the legal system. Additionally, it fosters the students’ skills in argumentation and critical thinking.
