Treasure Coast High student selected for elite academic competition

Congratulations to Treasure Coast High School junior Will Barr, a member of St. Lucie Public Schools’ Academic A Team and one of six students selected for the State of Florida’s Academic A Team (Team Florida). Will also received a $1,000 scholarship for his participation with the local team, which placed fourth in the state competition, just shy of advancing to the final stage of the competition.

Floresta Elementary students rally for FCAT

As a motivational kick-off to this year’s FCAT testing, students at Floresta Elementary School participated in the second annual “Tunnel of Encouragement.” Kindergarten through second grade students lined the main hallway, holding up colorful pom poms and creative signs and posters, while heartily chanting “Do your best on the test!” Students in third through fifth grade filed past this positive and energizing tribute from the younger students, to the cafetorium where they were provided inspiring words of encouragement from Principal Iseman, Assistant Principal Menikheim, and a very special video guest from the Miami Heat. F. K. Sweet students bring Middle Ages to life

Third and fourth grade students in gifted programs at F.K. Sweet Elementary School culminated a unit on the Middle Ages with a Medieval Feast. Students made surcoats, worn by knights, and baked trenchers (bread plates) to eat from. During the unit, students modeled castles, created a Coat of Arms, learned the art of illumination, and experimented with catapults. Gaines Academy Lady Colts win championship

Dan McCarty civics class team in Project Citizen state finals

Project Citizen is designed to help students learn how public policy is initiated and implemented at the various government levels. A significant portion of the Civics curriculum is allotted to this project. Students are responsible for identifying a community problem, examine alternative policies, develop a policy, and develop an action plan as a solution. The students in John Hett’s Civics class felt the problem of senior citizen (age 65 and over) depression is largely overlooked. Allapattah Flats students buggy about music

“Bugz” are taking over Danya Etter’s music class at Allapattah Flats K-8 School. Kindergarten through third grade students have been buzzing through this musical and are excited to perform for their parents and teachers on May 14, 2013. F. K. Sweet students learn math for a good cause

Frances K. Sweet Elementary School third graders are busily working on math. They all participated a Math-a-thon to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The students happily completed their Funbooks knowing that they were doing the math for a good cause.

Windmill Point students learn about energy

Fourth graders in Joanna Toto’s class at Windmill Point Elementary School are learning about energy. As they progress through the unit, they are creating an “Energy Flip Book” with all of the information they are learning about mechanical, sound, electrical, light, solar, heat and thermal energy. It is a great reference tool while giving the students a hands-on activity they can use in the future. Northport sixth grade science students process new information

Northport K-8 School sixth grader Tatiana Hamilton from Ellen Weiss’ class spent some very engaging and quality time on her homework recently. Tatiana baked a homeade cake depicting a cell study using edible items. The cake was an excellent portrayal of the cell demonstating ribosomes, lysosomes, mitochondria, cell membrane, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus and cytoplasm. Weiss’ students processed new information and literally “digested” the information into interesting and easily visualized little bites. Students celebrated the finale of their science FCAT by bringing in their cell cakes to share with the rest of their class. Centennial High School cadets visit Naval air station

Recently, 44 cadets from St. Lucie West Centennial High School Navy Junior ROTC took an Orientation Field Trip to the Key West Naval Air Station. The cadets stayed in the same barracks the sailors stay in. On the first day, after a long bus ride, the cadets met up with 25 other cadets from Key West High School at the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor. Twelve students, two from each of St. Lucie County’s six public high schools, were selected by their teachers for their aptitude and interest in science, to participate in a job shadowing experience at Vaccine Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) in Port St. Lucie. VGTI is recognized as a world class research institute that uses cutting edge technology and is on the frontier of science in the development of vaccines and immunotherapies that will improve human health around the globe. Third through fifth grade students at Savanna Ridge Elementary participated in a recent school spirited pep rally. Fair display awards presented, Kiwanis donates to schools and foundation

Awards for school displays at the 2013 St. Lucie County Fair were presented at the April 9, 2013, St. Lucie County School Board meeting, and the Kiwanis Sunrise Club also presented annual monetary awards to schools. The theme of the 2013 fair was, “500 Years of Florida Heritage.” For the elementary division, first place went to Lawnwood Elementary, $500; second place went to Windmill Pointe Elementary, $250; and third place to Village Green Environmental Science School, $100.
