Students in fifth and seventh grades in St. Lucie County Public Schools will continue this school year with a program begun last year with Vaccine Gene Therapy Institute called Saturdays with Scientists. Approximately 200 students will meet with the VGTI scientists at three different high schools during the school year to work on real scienitific projects. The purpose is to spark an interest in science for the students. On Friday, February 6, Mrs. Yost and Dr. Perry visited Mariposa’s second and third grade classes who were participating in the District’s pilot chess program called First Move. From the beginning of the year, these students and their teachers have learned how to play chess and even to develop strategies as they played the game. St. Lucie Schools held its first Math Bowl for students in grades three through five recently at Fort Pierce Central High School. Students from C. A. Moore Elementary, Weatherbee Elementary, Northport K8, Samuel S. Gaines Academy K8, and Dan McCarty School participated in this inaugural yet successful event. Several parents, teachers, math coaches, and principals also attended to join in the fun. Students competed at their schools to create the teams to compete in the math bowl. Beth Forbes’ First graders conducted an experiment in science. They predicted items would either float or sink in a tub of water. Each student had an opportunity to gently drop something into the tub. Most of their predictions were correct…however, they had two surprises: a tiny paper clip plummeted to the bottom, and a pencil floated on top of the water! First grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition recently went searching for a compass.  They found it on campus after learning about it during integrated language arts.  Great job Rockets!

First grade students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition enjoyed a PBS (Positive Behavior Support) dance recently. The theme was Spring in Paris and the students dressed in their finest attire. Students earned rocket fuel for their positive behavior and turned them in to their teachers to be able to attend the dance. All the classes enjoyed the event as well as the teachers. Pictured is first grader A’Marion Hall in the center surrounded by his classmates.

Students participated in the Walk-A-Thon with proceeds going to the Relay for Life team which helps the American Cancer Society.

Students in Mrs. Auciello’s first grade class at Mariposa Elementary used Play-Doh and toothpicks to create a 3-dimensional cube! Students in Mrs. Alice Parks’ first grade class at Frances K. Sweet worked on composing two-dimensional shapes.  The shapes were: rectangles, squares, trapezoids, and triangles.  The students created a composite shape using pretzels and marshmallows as their manipulatives.  The students enjoyed eating their shapes after making them. First-grade students at Allapattah Flats K-8 have been joyfully exploring Hispanic Heritage Month! Their excitement was evident as they learned about the rich cultures and traditions of Hispanic countries. To celebrate, students collaborated with their families to create beautiful flags representing their heritage, proudly showcasing their roots. A special highlight of the celebration was a visit from Mrs. Gonzalez and her eighth-grade Spanish students, who read the bilingual story I Love Saturdays y Domingos. First grade students in Jacqueline Harris’ class celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The students enjoyed a read aloud of Green Eggs and Ham followed by a surprise breakfast of which they were all eager to consume. Later on they made hats depicting the character Cat in the Hat using his hat and created “at” word family words which were displayed on the their hats. First grade students in Michelle Smith’s First Grade Class at Mariposa Elementary each have their individual goal folders. Inside their goal folders are sight words, math concepts (numbers, 3D shapes, etc.) and chunks (digraphs/blends/word families). The students pair up each week to practice their goals and congratulate one another when they reach their goals. The first graders at Lawnwood Elementary School recently had the wonderful opportunity to attend a live performance of The Nutcracker at Sunrise Theater. This field trip was not only a memorable adventure but also a valuable learning experience for our students. In preparation for the big day, students were immersed in the enchanting story of the Nutcracker in their classrooms. They explored the plot, identified main story elements, and discussed descriptive words and phrases that brought the story to life.
