The students in Mrs. Kari McIntyre’s Kindergarten class at Mariposa Elementary are having fun learning all about triangles! Michael Soto, Zykeria Reynolds, and Kaarina Wiley are demonstrating their skills by creating a human triangle. One of the many activities the students participated in was using a string to create a triangle in their classroom. Also, they were able to describe the triangle by its attributes; they recited that “A triangle has three sides and three vertices!”

Rivers Edge thanks Mid-Florida Bank for showing their support of the importance of reading. On Friday, October 23, representatives read to all of our Kindergarten classes and then gifted each student a book titled, No Sleep for the Sheep!

Rivers Edge staff and students put on the pink for Wear It Pink day! Personalizing the day for Rivers Edge, it was decided that all donations would be given to our amazing principal, Mrs. Walukiewicz. We hope for any and all forms of this disease to be removed from our planet!

Southport’s 6th grade students enjoyed an engaging, positive, and busy day at our first annual Student Retreat. Students participated in several activities and games throughout the day, as well as small group discussions where they learned about each other’s likes and dislikes. In addition to writing motivational letters to themselves (which will be given back to them during the school year), they received Palanca letters, which are letters of encouragement from teachers, staff, and family members. State Representative Larry Lee along with Tom Jones from the SLC Education Foundation, Dr. David Washington, and Olivia Watkins stopped by Westwood High School to present the school with a check from the Lighthouse Foundation and other private donors. The Lighthouse Foundation, founded in SLC by Representative Lee, assists the children and senior citizens of our community. Northport VPK-8 School Media Center is promoting stellar Florida Book Lists this year. The Sunshine State Reader Program is co-sponsored by the Office of Library Media and the Florida Association for Media in Education or FAME. “Started in 1984, this reading motivation program for students in grades 3-8 is designed to entice students to read high interest, contemporary literature for personal enjoyment. Fourth grade students at Frances K. Sweet Elementary School are working hard writing explanatory/informative essays.  Students examined parts of an essay, then worked with their shoulder partner to put an essay together in the correct order.  Each part was color coded for students to see the different parts.  After practicing the parts and reading about melting ice in the North and South Poles, the students wrote a response using all of their newly acquired knowledge. The kindergarten classes at Frances K. Sweet listened to the story, “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!” in the media center with Mrs. Laura Glennon.  After retelling the story to their friends, they created an edible craft of Pigeon driving the bus.  They students really enjoyed this delicious treat!  Pictured: Eden Wagerer ready to eat her bus.

Southport Middle School had its first Career Day event on Thursday, October 8, 2015. Volunteers throughout the community came to present their careers to our 7th and 8th grade students. Presentations were job-fair style and  volunteers each had a designated table or assigned area where they spoke about their area of expertise. Students were able to walk through and view each of the displays. They were given advice and learned what educational training and personal skills are necessary in each field, and what a typical day is like through games and presentations. Students in Port St. Lucie High School’s TV Production program exercised their technical, creative, collaborative, and communication skills as they took full responsibility for the production of the high schools’ first in a series of informative segments known as “JTV Chats.” The inaugural show was hosted by Sarah El Khoury, senior at PSLHS, and featured Mr. Bill Tomlinson, Executive Director of Student Services and Exceptional Student Education. Technical direction behind the scenes was attributed to Javid Khan and Tyrik Coleman, also seniors at PSLHS.

The Port Saint Lucie High School Jaguar Raider team competed in South Fork’s Raider Competition against 17 teams from 7 other schools. The competition consisted of five events: 3 mile team run, Cross Country Rescue, The Raider Fitness Challenge, 200lb tire flip over a 100 meter course, and the One-Rope Bridge event.  Before the Cross Country Rescue everyone takes a written first aid test, during the event the team simulates a casualty by carrying an 80-120lb stretcher over a mile long course while wearing three 30lb ruck sacks.  To complete the Raider Fitness Challenge the team must go through a … Read More
