A Proclamation read by Christine Hill designated the month of March, 2016 as Music In Our Schools Month, and Dr. Kevin Perry recognized students and teachers for their musical accomplishments.
The St. Lucie County Education Foundation and The Aaron Project (honoring the memory of Aaron Beauchamp) presented two grants to schools from the Aaron Project Arts in Education grant program. Thom Jones, Education Foundation Executive Director, introduced Vicki Rodriguez, board member of the Aaron Project, to present the grants.
Tad Fisher of the Florida Tobacco Cessation Alliance presented St. Lucie Public Schools with the Silver Level Recognition for the Worksite Wellness Award for Comprehensive Tobacco Cessation Benefits. Stacy Jacobson, Wellness Manager and champion for healthy choices, submitted the application on behalf of SLPS. The award is based upon the Public Health Services Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence to effect cessation treatments.
Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) Model Schools were announced at this evening’s Board Meeting. Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards were provided to 13 schools in the District. (Throughout the entire state, there are only 150 model schools. St. Lucie is proud to celebrate 13 of these schools.) The model schools have met specific criteria as established through the University of South Florida’s PBIS project and have reported innovative, creative and functional ways of supporting PBIS/MTSS in their respective schools.
To celebrate National School Breakfast Week, Cafeteria Manager Maria Coellos-Mayz and Manager Intern Diana Crosdale dressed up to welcome students to school on Monday to highlight the importance of a healthy breakfast each morning. Students were definitely excited to enter the cafeteria on Monday and see what a wonderful breakfast the cafeteria staff had prepared for them.
Mrs. Michelle Smith’s second grade students from Mariposa Elementary were privileged to visit the Hallstrom Planetarium at Indian River State College. The children learned how to find cardinal directions in the sky to help them discover different constellations. Students also took a trip through space, learning about how the planets closer to the sun are hotter than those further from the sun. Did you know you could fit a million Earths in the sun? Northport K-8 School held a spectacular morning of Community Involvement recently to celebrate not only the birthday of Dr. Seuss, but also the 30th birthday of the school. Northport is so proud of the forward progress made by the teachers and staff as well as the parents and students. School-based Immunization Clinics for 6th Graders (State required TDAP shot prior to entering 7th grade) Agreement with Healthy Schools, LLC, the company that administers the FluMist in the schools. Healthy Schools will come into each school that has 6th graders and offer the TDAP in the same way they have done the FluMist for the past two schools years. Consent Forms and Parent Letters will go home (only to 6th graders who still need the TDAP shot, according to Skyward). Five fifth graders from Frances K. Sweet had their Highwaymen-inspired art on display at the Highwaymen Heritage Festival. Alexis McEwen took the first place prize, winning a medal and money for art supplies for the school.
Do you know a child who can act, sing, and dance? Students in St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) are invited to try out for the 20th annual SLPS summer musical on Tuesday, March 15th, at the Port St. Lucie High School auditorium located at 1201 SE Lennard Road in Port St. Lucie. ST. LUCIE COUNTY – In a report of information compiled annually by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) once again moves closer to the head of the class in regard to top efficiency ratings for cost per capital outlay. In 2014-2015, the District was ranked 11 out of 67 school districts by reducing costs from $201.00 to $197.00. This compares to a ranking of 15 for the 2013-2014 academic year. Mrs. Ebersole’s 4th grade and Mrs. Eaker’s Kindergarten class met for the first time to introduce themselves to their new buddies. Students were given puzzle pieces that led them to their buddy when they found the match. They then exchanged notes and got to know each other. Students from both classes are looking forward to their weekly reading time together.
The PTO from Parkway Elementary School recently organized a family get together at Chuck-E-Cheese! This event was great and the families had a chance to play games and have a great time together.
Faculty, staff, and students created a welcome tunnel for our incoming students and their families at the Freshmen Open House. The FPWHS band and cheerleaders boosted everyone’s spirits in our courtyard and the JROTC along with our chorus led the presentation with of colors, Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem.
Mrs. Nesbitt’s first grade class worked on sequencing events in writing. Students created a flow map using Eric Carle’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
