St. Lucie Public Schools received the St. Lucie Education Impact Award at the annual United Way Spirit Awards Breakfast. Each year, the School District supports the United Way in the areas of health, education, and financial independence. Congratulations SLPS!

C. A. Moore Elementary School held a swearing in ceremony for the team of student leaders who were selected to be on the 2016-2017 Safety Patrol Battalion. Principal Hedeen welcomed parents and special guests Chief Deputy Garry Wilson of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy Chief Kenny Norris of the Fort Pierce Police Department, and Chief Brian Reuther of St. Lucie Public Schools to the event to honor the fifth grade students for the important role they will fulfill this year on campus as they lead, model, and support school safety. Kindergarten teachers and students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition invited grandparents to school to read with their grandchild and spend time with them. Students then completed a survey and picture about their grandparent with some help from their loved ones. It was a great event! Students in Mrs. Logue’s fifth grade classes at Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts used a variety of science tools to measure length, temperature, mass, force, volume, and time. They had a great time and learned firsthand how scientists measure in the real world!

With enjoyment and pride, Northport students in Kate Ploeckelman and Lorena Wilson’s second and third grade Rising Star student group, performed a rousing rendition of “The Exaggerated But True Story of the Constitution” and the “Camping Constitution!” It was so impressive to see the young students process new information and develop fluency using important and vital information. Learning about who wrote the Constitution and the meaning behind the Constitution was pride evoking. This year marked the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day on September 8, 2016. In honor of this special day, Bayshore students participated in a book exchange. First grade students Sophia Schmitt, Jilieah Taylor and Kaelyn Scheumeister (pictured from left to right) were excited to choose new books!
Boy, do we have fun in the library! Miss Alicia and Miss Victoria from the SLC Public Library brought cool books and library cards for all of the first grade students at Manatee Academy. Mrs. Remington invited county librarians to visit Manatee Academy as part of “Library Card Sign-up Month.” Students enjoyed listening, interacting, and being a part of the story telling with the county librarians.

America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. We are excited to announce the launch of Kids Tag Art in St. Lucie Public Schools for the 2016 – 2017 school year! This program is no ordinary fundraiser, as it allows fifth grade students to apply thinking and creative skills to create their own personal license plate in their art class. President of the Classified Teachers Association/Classified Unit (CTA/CU) Retirees Chapter Ms. Barbara Kaste presented a plaque to the Board Members and Superintendent E. Wayne Gent to express appreciation for the support that has been given to the Chapter, to New Teacher Orientation, and to the New Teacher Supply Depot.
Mr. Luke Hall was the recipient of a STAR Award at the September Board Meeting based upon the recommendation of one of his students’ parents who lauded his efforts to support her son as well as the other members of the positive band program. Mr. Hall’s high expectations for success with built-in factors for a safe and respectful environment were key attributes highlighted for this exceptional educator’s recognition.
Mrs. Cary Schott enthusiastically shares her love of the arts and her artistic talents with others. When asked if she and her students could provide art for District Office visitors and staff to appreciate, she readily provided three beautiful pieces to adorn the walls in the Community Room for all to enjoy. Thank you for helping to keep the arts alive in St. Lucie!
STAR Recognition for Exceptional Service and Support to St. Lucie Elementary Principal Latricia Woulard commended members of the Retired School Volunteer Program for their mentor support at St. Lucie Elementary. The dedicated team of individuals provided help and support to new teachers and retention efforts, beautification and establishment of a butterfly garden on campus, and fund raising efforts for supplies. Special recognition and thanks were given to the following at the September 13th Board Meeting: Barbara Kaste, Stephanie Sakowski, Arlene Hazelton, Ruthann Reuther, Marguerite Saady, Chuck Brothers, Vanessa Tillman, and Christine Rodic.
Superintendent E. Wayne Gent provided an educational update during the Economic Development Council’s Investors’ Lunch Meeting. With a focus on the School District’s escalating graduation rates as well as career and technical opportunities, he stressed how the need is greater than ever for the next generation to be prepared to deal with the demands of a complex world and economic realities.
On September 9, 2016, Palm Pointe 6th graders paid tribute to 9/11 by participating in a special presentation about multiple perspectives in history. Students heard the oral histories of guest speakers, Mr. Dennis Keane (retired NYC firefighter), Firefighter Ray Reiprecht (SLC Fire Department), and Ms. Diane Berger (former NYC air traffic controller), who were involved that day. The presenters expressed themes of unity and resilience, discussing how the country came together in the aftermath of the tragedy.
