Bayshore Elementary hosted its annual Literacy Night during Celebrate Literacy Week. Students and families had a great time learning about literacy while participating in literacy games and activities. Second grade student, Tyler Jennings, and his mom, Karen Jennings, worked together to set a literacy goal for Tyler while learning about additional resources at the event.

Northport is part of a coalition of St. Lucie County schools, spearheaded by SLPS Vice Chairman Dr. Donna Mills to bring talented and inspiring guest speakers to directly impact students and their achievement. Mariposa Elementary first graders Jackson Smith, Trinity Andrews, Delsin Geliga, Tyler Rubenstein, and Alejandro Delatorre worked as a team to utilize their problem solving skills to create an amazing “moving” model using gears! They were able to figure out how to get a ball from one end to the other without having to touch it! The gears did all the work!
Parents and students met for student-led conferences. Students explained their work and progress, and parents praised and asked questions. A great time for all.
Great morning of learning at Northport K-8 School recently as WPTV Weatherman Steve Weagle visited and intrigued students. Children in Kate Ploeckelman, Lorri Lamm, Kristin Schrader, Denise Fields and Jennifer Lusardi’s classes learned all about weather and weather calculations from the chief meteorologist. Students learned that to be a meteorologist, you need to love math, science and computer technology. Mr. Weagle spoke to students about weather forecasting and showed students how to make a homemade anemometer and how to study weather maps from satellites. News Channel 12’s Meteorologist Michael Ehrenberg came to Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition to speak with the fifth grade students to discuss weather patterns. He explained how using tools to measure weather helps meteorologists explain our forecast and provide us with our weather for the day or week. He also showed students pictures of what the studio looks like and how he is able to point on the green screen. Snowballs in all colors of the rainbow were whizzing through the air outside Weatherbee Elementary School this week. The PBIS Event for January was… a SNOWBALL FIGHT! Students spent their Mariner Dollars to buy into this annual fun filled affair which is always one of the most popular highlights of the WBE Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support program.
Sixteen participants gave it their all at Southport Middle School’s annual Spelling Bee. We would like to congratulate our 1st place winner, 6th grader, Sunana Singh, who will go on to the district competition, and our 2nd place winner 6th grader, Evan Puentes. Seniors were awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to launch their collegiate careers at the premier SLPS HBCU/HIS College Fair, and others were bought together with collegiate advisors who shed light on academic programs and information that will serve to brighten futures and spark dreams. On January 21st, the Westwood Panthers JROTC Cadets were honored to assist veterans of the Ft. Pierce and Indian River community who have been awarded the Purple Heart Award. The Purple Heart Award is awarded to veterans who have been wounded in action while serving in the United States Armed Forces. The event took place at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum. The Indian River Woodcarver’s, headed by Lloyd Lasenby, designed and carved eagle-head canes. Each cane was personalized to each Purple Heart recipient.
We the People: Project Citizen is an annual academic event organized by Florida Law Related Education, Inc. which explains the project as “a curricular program for upper elementary and secondary students designed and published by the Center for Civic Education (CCE) that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. On Monday, January 16, Fort Pierce Westwood JROTC Battalion participated in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade in Fort Pierce, Florida. The Panther Color Guard also presented the national colors as they marched down Martin Luther King Blvd. A mass formation of cadets followed behind the Color Guard. They marched and shouted cadences exciting the crowd around them. Many Fort Pierce Westwood alumni and children shouted positive comments while the cadets marched. The Battalion endured many miles marching all while maintaining their military bearing.
