This year’s inaugural Marching Band Showcase was a spectacular event that highlighted the talents and skills of students and directors. Fans crowded Lawnwood Stadium on Saturday evening (October 14) for an exciting evening of music as middle school and high school marching bands performed selections independently and (in a special performance) together under the direction of special guest conductor Dr. Kevin G. Perry. The Education Foundation, a huge supporter of Arts in Education, was also instrumental in supporting this event through its Matching Teacher Grant. Saturday, November 5th was a great day for the marching bands of SLPS as they performed in the District 13 Marching Band Music Performance Assessment (MPA)! The MPA is equal to FSA for classroom assessment. Band performances are assessed by critical experts in the field, and bands receive ratings in five categories by six judges. The highest two ratings are Superior (1) and Excellent (2). SLPS always strives for its bands to score at a 2 or higher. St. Lucie Public Schools appreciates and values the the role of music in education and recognizes that it can play a multifaceted part in the life of a student and has the power to inspire and transform. St. Lucie Public Schools’ Manufacturing and Engineering Program Advisory Board hosted a hybrid Career Day at Treasure Coast High School. Colleen Gill from CareerSource Research Coast as well as Bill Wilcox and Brooks Price from Phoenix Metals spoke to students in person while Eric Linero from Jenoptik spoke to the students virtually via Microsoft Teams. Dr. Donna Devlin from FAU spoke to Nardi Routten’s fourth grade class at F.K. Sweet Elementaryabout Bio-Diversity. Dr. Devlin is heading a mangrove restoration project where different genotypes of mangroves are planted, and testing whether or not different genotypes grow better in a mixed group or in a similar group. Mangrove restoration is taking place in several areas as they are vital to the ecosystem. The fourth graders will meet Dr. Devlin at Blind Creek Park this week to assist with this project.
Manatee K-8 Academy showed up with a spirited team to support Autism Awareness during April’s Charity Flag Football event. Go team!
On October 16th, Manatee K8 was host to a luncheon for District custodial employees for Custodial Appreciation Day. A great time was had by all who attended. Events like these not only recognize the incredible work of our custodians but also foster a sense of belonging and appreciation within our school community. SLPS truly appreciates the hard work and dedication of its custodial staff. Thank you for all that you do!

Principal Lilly Beauchamp, students, and staff welcomed members of business and community organizations to Manatee Academy as they gathered for the Chamber of Commerce’s Education & Business Breakfast. This event, sponsored by the Education Foundation, provided opportunities for participants to experience first-hand SLPS’s middle school Vet Tech Program, z-space (an interactive virtual reality learning experience), and other elements of digital literacy integrated into students’ academic routines.
Manatee Academy held our 2nd annual Geography Bee last month. After a sudden death tie-breaker, Gabriel Mustaciuolo was crowned Manatee Academy’s Geography bee winner for 2015 narrowly edging out runner-up Steven Forgoress! All participants did an outstanding job. Gabriel will now take the state qualifying exam next month. Many thanks to Dawn Montoya and Amy Mason for keeping this Geo Bee coordinator’s nerves in check and for serving as timekeeper and scorers. Palm Pointe Educational Research School @ Tradition’s first grade students recently enjoyed a presentation by the Ft. Pierce Manatee Observation and Education Center. Students heard information on “Habitats, Who Lives Where?” After the discussion, students were able to see and touch a turtle, snake and lizard. This was a fun, interactive learning experience for everyone.
Mr. Clarke’s science classes at Performance Base Preparatory Academy made a recent trip to the Manatee Center and afterward paid a quick visit to the nearby “Seven Gables House”. Students first attended an outdoor lecture by Elyse Geraghty, the educational director at the Manatee Center, where they learned about manatee physiology, habitat, and evolutionary development. Afterward, students explored the indoor facility in which they observed, analyzed, and even interacted with some particular displays. SLPS is proud to announce that Manatee Academy’s team project entitled “Keep Port St. Lucie Afloat” is advancing to the Project Citizen National Competition in Los Angeles. Prior to receiving this honor, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) had a weighted and impressive showing at the state competition which boasted a total of six middle school projects. Of these six projects that advanced to the state level, three were from SLPS. Those three were teams from Southern Oaks Middle School, West Gate K-8 (recognized as a top finisher in the local competition), and Manatee Academy.

On Friday, May 16, 2025, the Port St. Lucie community came together for the vibrant “Kickin’ It For Andrew” 5K Color Run, hosted at Manatee Academy K-8 School. This annual event, organized by the Andrew Schmeer Foundation, honors the memory of Andrew Schmeer, who tragically lost his life in a car accident on September 8, 2014. The foundation continues his legacy by raising funds to provide college scholarships for well-rounded students along the Treasure Coast, as well as supporting animal rescues and children’s charities. Manatee Academy Vet Prep eighth graders and several of their parents visited Fort Pierce Westwood High School’s Veterinary Assisting Academy to tour the available programs offered through the Career and Technical Education Department. Middle school students studying animal science learned about the many benefits the attractor program has to offer. Seniors in the program guided them through several hands-on experiences that they could expect as students, such as proper dog restraints, dog grooming and the many college/career opportunities available through FFA.
