Local Teacher of the Year Finalists Announced

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FL — Fashioned after a red-carpet celebration, the three St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) Teacher of the Year Finalists were announced today and supported with a backdrop of cheers from the surprised candidates’ students and colleagues. Makeda-Ione Brome (Fort Pierce Westwood High School), Cheri V. School Community Draws Together

A wonderful program was recently held in the Northport Media Center! The entire fourth grade came together with their teachers to learn about the autoimmune disease, Alopecia. Jeffery Woytovich, a representative from the “Children’s Alopecia Project,” came to raise awareness about alopecia. Students and teachers learned that there are three types of alopecia, or hair loss, Alopecia Areata, which is patchy hair loss, Alopecia Totalis which is majority or total loss of hair above the neck, and Alopecia Universalis which is total body hair loss. Elks Lodge #1520 Donation

Mr. Lenny Smallacombe of the Elks Lodge #1520 is a powerhouse advocate for students and was honored for spearheading donation efforts for St. Lucie Public Schools students. What started out six years ago as a weekend backpack program for five children has turned into an ever-growing platform of support. Mr. Smallacombe and his fellow lodge members have expanded their weekend food backpack program to hundreds of children, fulfilled special school program needs, provided complementary summer camp opportunities to students, secured grants for literacy projects, and supported students’ family nutrition needs during special times of the year. Bluebird Foundation Donates Instruments

Sunny Booker, president of the Bluebird Foundation, and director of alternative education for SLPS presented seven middle and high school students with instruments during the January School Board Meeting. Bluebird Education Foundation serves St. Lucie County and provides musical instruments for youth with the goal of helping them pursue musical interests and supporting the love of music.  The Foundation gifted violins, a cello, flute, trombone, and clarinet to students as part of the Recycling in the Key of E (RIKE) initiative in which the Foundation purchases or receives donations of gently used instruments.

Picturing Economics

The students in Mrs. Harris’ first grade class at Village Green Environmental School participated in the Florida Council on Economic Education’s Fall 2018 Poster Contest. The students all drew pictures describing various economic terms such as entrepreneur, trade, goods and services, producers and consumers, etc. Students from all over the State participate in this contest (K-12) throughout the year. Shirly Ferrer and Evelina Silverberg both won!  Congratulations.

LPA GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH IS HONORED

On December 19th, Coach Wendell Adams was honored for winning his 400th girls basketball game. Coach Adams is in his 20th season, and in February 2018 he became the girls basketball all-time wins leader on the Treasure Coast. LPA WRESTLERS TAKE FIRST PLACE

Lincoln Park Academy, for the first time ever, has a wrestling program. On December 22, the Greyhounds took 1st place at the Battle on the Lake tournament hosted by Okeechobee High School. Two LPA wrestlers at the tournament were Rakan and Rayan Abulathou. The brother duo pinned every wrestler they faced. Congratulations to Coach Pryor and all of our Greyhound wrestlers.

MILESTONE FOR LPA BASKETBALL STANDOUT

January is National Mentoring Month

The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) is proud to celebrate January as National Mentoring Month. This nationwide initiative is in its 18th year and is a means of celebrating and promoting the value of mentoring to the students of Florida. FDOE encourages all schools to use the month of January as an opportunity to renew their efforts to recruit and train more mentors. National Mentoring Month 2019 celebrates mentoring and the positive effects it can have on young lives. For the second year, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) boasts a graduation rate above 90 percent with 1.7 percent growth this year landing the District at 91.8 percent – well above the State average.
