SLW Centennial Medical Academy Students Collect Toys for Local Children in Foster Care

Mrs. Durkee and Mrs. Higgins’ Allied Health classes and HOSA-Future Health Professional members partnered up with Communities Connected for Kids for their annual Making Christmas Bright project. CCK oversees child-welfare services in Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast, and Guardians for New Futures, which helps meet the unfunded needs of children in foster care. The project has served thousands of children in Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties. On Friday January 11, 2019, the Culinary Department at St. Lucie West Centennial High School hosted StratherDuPree II, the Director of Articulation and Partnerships at Indian River State College, and Rachel Rosiak, an IRSC Recruitment Specialist. Mr. DuPree and Ms. Rosiak received an overview of the program from the teacher, Christina Gedke-Balaschak, and interacted with students as they prepared to make five different soups.

K-9s On Patrol

On Thursday, January 17, students in the Law Academy at SLW Centennial High School learned about K9 Patrols and how K9s are used in law enforcement. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office shared information on how the dogs are trained, handled, and used in law enforcement.

Technology Tuesdays

Every other Tuesday, Julia Hilburn and Laurie Boyer will host a Technology session for Teachers via Microsoft Teams. From the comfort of your home, classroom, office, or public location you can learn everything you need to know about Microsoft and Office365 products to better enhance technology within your classroom and work environment. Each session will run for roughly one hour. You can become a Microsoft Innovative Educator by attending all sessions and completing a “Check for Understanding” form at the end. Northport Takes to the Sky!

As part of their Flight and Space curriculum, 8th grade Northstars students in Mr. Fess’ STEM class designed a flight obstacle course. Throughout the day, other students had the opportunity to fly through the course and try for the fastest time.
